RPGamer Round-Up: January 28 – February 4

Welcome to the latest edition of RPGamer’s round-up column, where we look back at some of the articles that we have posted over the previous week. This article is designed to give reminders of some interesting content and stories that our readers might have missed.

2023 wasn’t necessarily plain sailing for the industry, but there’s no denying it was another year packed with stellar RPGs. After taking our usual time to digest the past year’s releases, RPGamer is proud to present our Best of 2023 awards.


Editorial Content

A mobile game turned fighting game and now an action RPG, Granblue Fantasy: Relink takes Gran and his crew on another epic adventure. Jon Jansen reports that thrilling cutscenes, narrative, and action packed combat make this a wonderful, albeit condensed, experience.

Owlcat Games tries to pull off another engrossing CRPG that encapsulates a beloved tabletop universe. Ryan Costa sees if Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader’s deep world-building and storytelling do enough to override the multitude of bugs that plague it.

Can witty narration and brutally hard gameplay make for a great turn-based roguelite? Ryan Costa takes a look at how successful this combination is for Outcast Tales: The First Journey.

 


Major News

Sony and Shift Up revealed an April release date for Stellar Blade. Meanwhile, a six-minute trailer introduces its story, main characters, and various gameplay elements.

Square Enix revealed new media and details for Saga Emerald Beyond ahead of its launch in April. The update introduces duo protagonist option Bonnie and Formina, as well as other story and gameplay elements.

Action RPG Death of a Wish has been given a March release date. The nightmarish title emphasises tactical aggression and magical combos.

Square Enix released a PC update for the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters. The update adds in the additional features included in the PS4 and Switch releases of all six games.

Bandai Namco Entertainment released a trailer for the next Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot DLC. It features Goku facing off against a mysterious young warrior.

Mintrocket’s Dave the Diver is heading to PS4 and PS5 this April. Not only that, an encounter with the King of the Monsters awaits in May.

A double set of RPG Kickstarter campaigns opened this week. Aftnareld and Anshar Publishing’s action RPG Coridden allows players to shapeshift into any monster defeated in battle, while Wiggins Industries’s turn-based RPG Bestiario is inspired by classic JRPGs and Spanish mythology.
