2023 was a banner year for game releases, but nothing topped Octopath Traveler 2 for GOTY. With its deep and strategic combat, well-developed character narratives and absolutely stellar soundtrack, Octopath stood head and shoulders above the competition. Having always been a defender of the first Octopath, I found myself amazed by the ways in which Square was able to take an already incredible release and somehow identify ways to improve upon it. Octopath II now ranks in my top 10 of all time list and my only regret is that it did not find the commercial success it deserved thanks in large part to Square’s anemic marketing. It definitely deserved a better fate.
