#JRPGJuly 2018 Introduction

Summer is in full swing in the Northern Hemisphere and that means one thing around RPGamer: it’s time for #JRPGJuly. For those that are unfamiliar with the event, it was created as a community game-along by Anne Lee of Chic Pixel. The goal of #JRPGJuly is pretty straightforward: play JRPGs and share the experience with others through blogging, social media, forums, the comments, and on the nifty new RPGamer Discord server.

The RPGamer staff is back participating again, and there will be weekly posts sharing our thoughts and progress on the games we’re playing. You can also follow the staffers below through social media to see the progress we’re making and carry on the conversation. Some staff members may be streaming their experience and plenty will be sharing screenshots on Twitter. We hope that everyone enjoys playing and discussing JRPGs all month long!

Here’s what the staff are planning on tackling this month:

Sam Wachter (@merrygodown) will be on a road trip with the boys from Final Fantasy XV. I can’t wait to hear whether the open-world Final Fantasy agrees with her or not. RPGcast member Kelley Ryan (@redrock963) is also going on a Final Fantasy trip, but of a different vintage. It sounds like after writing about it earlier this year, Kelley has the itch to play Final Fantasy X again, this time in glorious HD form. Good luck Kelley!

Robert Sinclair (@lolwhoops) continues the Final Fantasy theme as he plans to play more Final Fantasy XIV as well as bouncing between Shin Megami Tensei IV, Fire Emblem Fates, and maybe tossing in some Pokémon as well. That’s a lot of things to choose between, though I can certainly relate to trying to juggle too many games at one time.

Mike Apps (@askwheels), Host of Q&A Quest, is tackling his backlog on Nintendo platforms. He’s going to be focusing on the new Switch version of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana while also playing a bit of The Alliance Alive and The Lost Child. Lots of recent JRPG goodness in that batch of games; sounds like Wheels will be having some fun.

Joshua Carpenter (@jscarpe) will also be enjoying a Falcom action RPG. Rather than the relatively famous Ys series, I’ll be diving into Falcom’s extensive back-catalog to play Zwei: The Arges Adventure. I played Zwei: The Ilvard Insurrection last year and found it to be an incredibly charming game so I can’t wait to start playing this one.

With a big JRPG coming out in the middle of the month, it should come as little surprise that a few staff members are planning to jump into Octopath Traveler when it hits the Switch on July 13. Both Cassandra Ramos (@BerryEggs) and Anna Marie Privitere (@amprivitere) plan on tackling the multiple paths Octopath has on offer. Heck, if I can get through Zwei in a timely manner, I’ll probably join them. That art style is really compelling and I’m curious to see how the stories of the characters tie together. To kill the days till Octopath comes out, Cassandra will be attempting to finish Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology while Anna Marie will be getting in some quality Vanillaware time with Odin Sphere Leifthrasir on the Vita.

That’s what our staff has planned for #JRPGJuly in 2018. In addition to weekly written updates, the staff will continue the conversation on Twitter and there will be some healthy discussion on RPGCast as well. If you want to join in, just use the hashtag #JRPGJuly on your social media platform of choice and talk about the JRPGs you’re playing or chat with the staff about what we are playing. There is also a specific JRPGJuly channel on our new Discord server, feel free to join the discussion there. Heck, let us know in the comments what JRPG you are planning to play this month.

since i have a ton of games to play, I may talk about a bunch of stuff. Like, this morning I was feeling in a Disgaea 3 mood. Item World calls and I must answer. Also I got to find my SMT IV guide because I want that neutral ending. Pokemon wise, I’m playing Alpha Sapphire and losing steam. It’s not one of my favourites.

I’ll be tweeting a lot, so be sure to follow me @lolwhoops and check out the hashtag #JRPGJuly to find all sorts of goodness for this month.

My PS4 backlog is getting a little top-heavy, so I’ll fire up Blue Reflection for JRPG July.
