RPG Backtrack Episode 191: Just Plain Vanillaware

Three-dimensional visuals are used by most developers now.  Vanillaware is an important exception to that trend, and its Dragon’s Crown, Odin Sphere and Muramasa demonstrate just how nice two-dimensional things can look.

Another great show, almost good enough for me to try one of these & ditch my turn-based lifestyle, but not quite…

Working though your history I’ve loved the intro to the Pokemon episode recently & the SMTIV & Soul Hackers episode was inspiring enough to convince me to get a used copy of Soul Hackers!

OK, another comment on your backlog of backtracks. I was listening to a show from two years ago (Episode 166: “Agarest in Peace”) where Phil talked about an audiobook he listened to about the ups and downs of Nintendo and he finished talking about it discussing the Wii-U’s controller. He talked about how how the controller was a nice idea, but it stunk that the stuff on the screen couldn’t be easily shown there without running the Wii U. Then he nailed (long before reveal) almost exactly what the Nintendo NX was going to be: he said it should be a portable thing that maybe with the push of a button would become beamed up to the big HD TV. Nice job predicting what the Switch would be like!
