RPGamer Round-Up: December 22 – January 12

Welcome to the latest edition of RPGamer’s round-up column, where we look back at some of the articles that we have posted over the intervening period. This article is designed to give reminders of some interesting content and stories that our readers might have missed.

We enter another year stacked full of exciting upcoming releases. The RPGamer staff picked out some of the highlights they are looking forward to in 2025 (and likely beyond).


Reviews

After the untimely demise of AlphaDream, the Mario & Luigi series is back with a new game developed by a different studio. Cassandra Ramos reports on whether Mario & Luigi: Brothership lives up to expectations.

Doublequote Studio’s HeistGeist takes players to a 2040s cyberpunk central Europe. Alex Fuller reports that tight gameplay and a focus on its narrative helps the deckbuilder stand out from its numerous competitors.

The River City crew is back to continue its take on the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. While Alex Fuller finds that River City Saga: Three Kingdoms Next doesn’t really impress on the gameplay front, its off-the-rails story offers some amusement.

Kyoko and Misako are back and are still as questionable as ever. Sam Wachter sees if their second outing is worth the trip back to River City.

AN Productions’s Signy & Mino: Against All Gods is a turn-based RPG following Signy as she looks to find answers for her parents’ death alongside her canine companion Mino. RPGamer was able to ask solo developer Shawn Tanner about the game and its creation.

Odd Bug Studio’s sophomore effort iterates on the combat system that made the first entry so engaging. After a few hours of gametime, Pascal Tekaia states that there are new pros and cons to be found.

It’s time to wrap up the last chunk of games Sam played for Backloggin’ the Year. Check out if she completed her personal challenges and which games for the Fall months were her favourites.

 


Major News

Capcom announced a second open beta for Monster Hunter Wilds. The second beta will take place across two weeks in February.

Bandai Namco and FromSoftware announced a closed network test for Elden Ring Nightreign. Applications are currently open for the test, which will run next month.

Nintendo released a new trailer for Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition. The three-minute video teases some of the Definitive Edition’s new story content.

Tower defence RPG Defender’s Quest II: Mists of Ruin finally has a release date. The game will launch on PC in a few weeks, with PlayStation and Switch versions to follow.

Japanese developer EasyGameStation revealed an upcoming HD edition of Recettear: An Item Shop’s Tale. The simulation/action RPG sees players helping Recette run a shop to avoid losing her home.
