Monark Announced, Debut Trailer Unveiled

Publisher FuRyu and developer Lancarse have announced Monark, a tactical RPG being developed for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. The game is scheduled to release in Japan on October 14, 2021, with Clouded Leopard Entertainment releasing the game on that same date in Asia. NIS America will release the game, including a PC version, in North America and Europe in early 2022. The announcement trailer along with an image gallery for the game can be viewed below.

Monark is set in a mysterious realm known as the Otherworld, with the protagonist suddenly waking up at the Shin Mikado Academy. The academy is cut off from the real world and hosts a Mist that is driving students mad, with the protagonist gaining the Authority of Vanity, a Daemonic power that is fueled by their Ego and acts as a safeguard from the manic effects. Players team up and build relationships with four classmates, taking the role of vice president for the group’s True Student Council.

Monark will feature a MAD gauge that when filled will cause the character to go into a berserk rage, attacking friend and foe. Players will be able to control up to six characters in turn-based battles with combo attacks, and free movement that rewards strategic placement. The seven axis points of Pride, Wrath, Envy, Lust, Greed, Gluttony, and Sloth will shape the player’s Ego and change depending on diagnostic tests provided throughout the story. The axis points will also unlock Fiends that only answer to the player, and how Ego is raised will determine what options open up for these Fiends.

A Limited Edition for the PlayStation 5 version of Monark is available for pre-order on the NIS America online store. The Limited Edition includes a collector’s box, art book, soundtrack, cloth poster, and five acrylic stands. Monark includes developers than have worked on titles like the original Shin Megami Tensei, with the revealed staff members including:

  • Character Design: so-bin (Overlord light novel series)
