The Expanse: Osiris Reborn Talks Belter Creole
Owlcat Games released a new behind-the-scenes video for its upcoming sci-fi RPG The Expanse: Osiris Reborn. The six-minute video talks about the game’s implementation of Belter language and culture from The Expanse books and TV show. To help with translating Lang Belta — a creole of English, Romance, Germanic, Slavic, Asian, African and Middle Eastern languages — and the expressive gestures used by the Belters, the team used the help of linguist Nick Farmer, creator of Lang Belta for the TV show, as well as gesture and motion capture specialist Roberto Campanella.
In the game, players will be able to choose from an Earther, Martian, or Belter background for their customised protagonist. If they are from the Belt, the player character can speak Lang Belta, and will get unique dialogue options and opportunities, understand conversations that they otherwise wouldn’t, and get easier concessions from Belter characters. Meanwhile, those playing as an Earther or a Martian will need to work harder to earn the trust of Belters.
The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is billed as expanding upon the universe depicted in The Expanse TV and novel series, which is set in a future where humanity has colonised the Solar System. Players control a customised Pinkwater mercenary and are joined by two squadmates in battle; squadmates have their own pasts and motives, with their loyalty impacted by player decisions. A closed beta is available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S for those who have purchased the $289 Collector’s Edition or $79.99 Miller’s Pack from the game’s official website, which is planned to run until the game’s launch in spring 2027.
