Where Winds Meet Update Preview
Where Winds Meet appears to be coming along quite swimmingly, featuring impressively authentic and blisteringly exciting wuxia combat, along with a rich, historically inspired setting rife with conflict, drama, and plenty of factional intrigue.
Continuing its rollout of expansions and updates, open-world wuxia action RPG Where Winds Meet is set to add more content. Following its Hidden Mountain update, the addition of the Heaven’s Threshold area, and ahead of an appearance at Gamescom, RPGamer was invited to a virtual preview event, where developer Everstone Studio and publisher NetEase showed off more information about the game’s planned evolution of its open world, upgrades to its wuxia action combat, new gameplay additions, and plans for the game’s future.
Where Winds Meet takes place in the Jianghu, the martial arts underworld of 10th-century China, where players must navigate the interconnections between the martial world and the complex political instability of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period. With the current era of the gameĀ titled “Where Winds Meet 2.0,” the preview revealed that Chapter 3 of the Hidden Mountain update will release on September 16, 2026, bringing the storyline to a finale. The video showed that many revelations will come to light, and the update will bring a long-awaited confrontation with Qianye, whom players had fought earlier at the end of the Blissful Retreat Campaign.
The cinematics were impressive, with the characters delivering their lines quite seriously and with all the usual wuxia flair. Animations and visuals, especially in the Mohist Hill sect’s technologically advanced hideouts, appeared to have improved over previous updates, with the preview emphasizing continued efforts to enhance the dynamic nature of environments through enhanced lighting and higher-fidelity graphics. Particularly impressive elements of the environment included the deep-sea diving bells and gear mechanisms, which were lush with ancient Chinese motifs.
In addition to bringing story arcs to a conclusion, the update showed snippets of upcoming gameplay content, including two special bosses, two open-world field bosses, and other features. One of these features is an entirely new combat style: Bamboo Cut – Draught, which is set to arrive in the game on September 3, 2026. Modeled after the drunken fist style and inspired by Jackie Chan’s filmĀ Drunken Master, the new style features a rapid succession of direct blows that vary in predictability yet remain fluid. The animations looked quite impressive, with clear attention to detail and impressive enemy AI responses to the confusing moves. At the same time, players comically swigged alcohol from a large container before executing some of the special moves.
In order to improve the authenticity of the martial styles within the game, the preview stressed that the new drunken fist-inspired style involved increased collaboration with legendary martial arts choreographer Yuen Woo-ping, who was recently named their Global Action Consultant and has previously worked on films such as Drunken Fist; Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; The Matrix; and Kill Bill. Some videos were shown of Woo-ping leading and even participating in motion capture, which translated over into the game’s animations quite impressively.
As a final update, the preview showed that the game is set to feature two entirely new gameplay experiences. The first is an extraction mode with a wuxia flair, said to involve risk, strategy, and survival. Gameplay footage showed a variety of ways to succeed at the extraction, including using disguises, stealth, and thievery, or by taking opponents head-on in chaotic battles. In both instances, the game appeared to be highly tense. The second mode will be a seasonal event known as Ghost Month, which is rooted in traditional Chinese folklore and taboos. A few snippets showed wuxia combat in a dark urban area with a supernatural flair, featuring dilapidated temples and traditional Chinese lanterns casting an eerie glow. This appeared to be the most visually and atmospherically distinct area, especially compared to other areas shown in the preview.
While most of the preview focused on the conclusion of the Hidden Mountain saga, the developers stressed their long-term commitment to the game’s future. Based on the preview, Where Winds Meet appears to be coming along quite swimmingly, featuring impressively authentic and blisteringly exciting wuxia combat, along with a rich, historically inspired setting rife with conflict, drama, and plenty of factional intrigue. Interested players can expect the new combat style to arrive on September 3, 2026, with Chapter 3 of the Hidden Mountain update arriving later that month on September 16.
