New Release Round-Up (November 17, 2022)
Welcome to RPGamer’s new release round-up. In this column we look to provide our readers with details on all of the RPGs released over the week. Please note we do not currently include Early Access releases where the game is still in development.
Bound by Blades
Action RPG Bound by Blades is the set in the lands of Ashmyr. Players select one of three different characters and set out to defeat the ten Ilcyon bosses (and their Extreme versions), collecting loot and resources to craft new equipment. The game includes three difficulty modes, two-player co-op, and an Endless Dungeon with score and ranking systems for replayability. Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android versions are planned for 2023.
Monochrome Mobius: Rights and Wrongs Forgotten
Monochrome Mobius: Rights and Wrongs Forgotten acts as a prequel to Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception, and tells the story of major character Oshtor. At the time of the game, Oshtor is living with his mother and sister in a province of the Yamato Empire and investigates a matter for the local lord, during which he comes across a girl named Shunya. The game features a turn-based battle system as opposed to the rest of the series’ grid-based tactical combat.
Pentiment is a narrative adventure directed by Josh Sawyer (Pillars of Eternity series, Fallout: New Vegas). The game is set in 16th-century Bavaria and follows artist Andreas Maler as he investigates a murder for which his friend has been accused. It features an art style based on medieval manuscripts, early print, and woodcuts.
Pokémon Scarlet / Violet
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet take place in the new region of Paldea. Players control a student at the Naranja Academy or Uva Academy, where they are sent out on independent study “Treasure Hunt”. In addition, players participate in the traditional Gym Challenge and Pokémon League cycle as well as taking on the trouble-making Team Star. The games introduce a new element to Pokémon battles, Terastallization. Unique to Paldea, this phenomenon causes a Tera Jewel to appear on a Pokémon’s head and its body to take on a gem-like appearance. All Paldean Pokémon can Terastallize, and each Pokémon has its own Tera Type. Terastallization boosts the power of moves associated with its Tera Type and will change the Pokémon’s Type to that of its Tera Type if the Tera Type is different to its regular Type.
Ultimate ADOM: Caverns of Chaos
Ultimate ADOM: Caverns of Chaos is a follow-up to the original ADOM (Ancient Domains of Mystery) dungeon-crawler. Players can choose between a new graphic mode or the classic ASCII-based symbols as well as 3D and top-down camera views. A PlayStation 4 release is also planned but has not yet been dated.
Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana
Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana follows longtime series protagonist Adol (and his partner Dogi) after they become shipwrecked on the Isle of the Seiren. The duo team up with other survivors to try and find a way off the island, while Adol has dreams of a mysterious girl from the past named Dana.
