Made in Abyss: Binary Star Falling into Darkness Details Deep in Abyss Mode

Spike Chunsoft provided more details on the upcoming Made in Abyss: Binary Star Falling into Darkness. The latest update covers the game’s Deep in Abyss mode, which features an original story supervised by series creator Akihito Tsukushi. While the other mode, Hello Abyss, is a retelling of the Made in Abyss manga/anime series, Deep in Abyss puts players in the role of a customised Cave Raider who embarks on solo expeditions to complete missions and bring back relics.

The player character joins Belchero Orphanage as a fledgling “Bell” Cave Raider of a giant hole in the earth named Abyss, which holds remnants of a long-gone civilisation. They join three other students — Raul, Tiare, and Dorothea — and the four eventually go out on their first expedition, but quickly learn of the harsh dangers of Abyss.

The game features a cycle of quests and explorations as the player character earns money and experience, which raises their Cave Raider level and lets them dive deeper into Abyss. Players prepare for the expeditions in the town of Orth, where they pick up quests and buy necessary items and gear. Orth also has a relic appraisal store where players bring relics found on their trips.

Players have three attributes: physical strength, fullness, and stamina. With each action, their fullness and stamina reduces. Stamina recovers automatically over time, while fullness is restored by eating food, though stamina will not recover when fullness is at zero. In addition to keeping their attributes up, players will need to consider their supplies as well as their tool durability and the weight of everything they are carrying. Carrying too much will prevent players from running, or even mining and attacking.

Once players have achieved their objective, they will still need to make it back out of Abyss. The further they descend, the greater strain they put on themselves with the “Curse of the Abyss”. This may result in them vomiting, significantly reducing their fullness, or having blood come out of their body, reducing both fullness and stamina. Players can also be attacked by hostile monsters, or discover that they need to find an alternate route back to base from the original descent.

Made in Abyss: Binary Star Falling into Darkness will release worldwide on September 2, 2022. The game will be available digitally for PC, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch, as well as physically for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch.
