Baldur’s Gate III Details Early Access Character Creation Options

Larian Studios provided more details of the character creation options available to players in Baldur’s Gate IIIs Early Access version, which launches on Steam, GOG.com, and Google Stadia on Tuesday, October 6, 2020. Players will be able to select from sixteen races/sub-races, along with six character classes — Cleric, Fighter, Ranger, Rogue, Warlock, and Wizard — each of which has two sub-classes. The full list of races and sub-races is as follows (sub-races in brackets):

  • Human
  • Githyanki
  • Elf (High Elf and Wood Elf)
  • Drow (Seldarine Drow and Lolth-Sworn Drow)
  • Half-Elf (High Half-Elf, Wood Half-Elf, and Drow Half-Elf)
  • Dwarf (Gold Dwarf and Shield Dwarf)
  • Halfling (Lightfoot Halfling and Strongheart Halfling)
  • Tiefling (Asmodeus Tiefling, Mephistopheles Tiefling, and Zariel Tiefling)

Players will have 150 different head shapes to choose from in total, which are based on 3D scans of actors and models. Additional customisation options, including hair style, hair and eye colour, and other facial features will also be available. When creating their character, players will assign points into six attributes as well as selecting skill proficiencies. Classes with access to magic will let players select a number of cantrips and spells. Races will affect some abilities as well as how the character is treated in the game.

Baldur’s Gate III is based on the latest fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons ruleset. Its story sees the player character and some others captured and forced to host a Mindflayer tadpole before the airship they are on crashes. There will also be five origin stories in the Early Access version, which offer pre-generated characters in a similar manner to Divinity: Original Sin II. Origin characters that are not selected will be available as recruitable party members.
