Compile Heart Details Varnir of the Dragon Star’s Disconcerting Premise

Shortly after announcing Varnir of the Dragon Star: Ecdysis of the Dragon, Compile Heart has released some more details about its newest title. The new details highlight the game’s premise, setting, and main characters, with some new character art revealed along with them.

Varnir of the Dragon Star is set on the world of Valneria, which has huge dragon fossils that rise above the clouds and is filled with plains, forests, valleys, and mountains. The world has achieved a roughly medieval technological level, and is ruled by an Emperor and the Imperial Order, though the empire’s influence does not yet cover the entire world.

In Valneria, witch is a term applied to those with draconic powers. This power is granted by a dragon seed inside them that causes the witch to succumb to madness unless they drink dragon blood. However, this dragon blood causes the seed to grow, until the dragon within eventually eats it way out of its host. Ten years prior to the start of the game, an event caused the vast majority of the living witches, who banded together in groups called “Roosts”, to either be killed by dragons or in witch hunts from the general populace, leaving their remaining number in single figures.

The main character of the game is a knight named Zephy, who becomes lost in a remote forest. He is rescued by a witch, but in the process drinks the blood of a dragon that attacked him, causing a special power to awaken. Joining him in the game are various witches. In order of their appearances in the art gallery below, they are Minessa, Karikaro, Laponetto, and Charlotta.

Varnir of the Dragon Star will be released in Japan for PlayStation 4 on October 11, 2018. There is no news regarding a potentital western release.
