Final Fantasy Resonance Announced

Square Enix has announced its first HD-2D Final Fantasy title, Final Fantasy Resonance. The game will release on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2 on October 22, 2026. It will be available in a standard physical and digital editions for $59.99, while a $69.99 Digital Deluxe Edition will include a selection of in-game items. There will also be a $209.99 Collector’s Edition that contains the base game, the Digital Deluxe Edition bonuses, an art book, the CD soundtrack, an acrylic block set, and a unique Final Fantasy Trading Card Game promotional card.

Final Fantasy Resonance is based on the first story arc of mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, with Square Enix stating that “it has been refined and extensively rebuilt as a full-fledged console-quality RPG experience”. The game follows Rain, commander of the airship squadron in Grandshelt, the Kingdom of Knights, which is blessed by the power of crystals.

He receives a royal decree to investigate the waning barrier of the Earth Shrine, where he and his childhood friend (and deputy commander) Lasswell encounter a mysterious man who defeat them and shatters the Earth Crystal. Returning to Grandshelt, they find it under attack from the man, manage to rescue the king, and set out on a journey alongside a mysterious girl they meet called Fina to try and protect the remaining crystals.

The game features turn-based combat that uses a timeline system displaying the current turn order of both allies and enemies. Enemies have a stagger gauge; by depleting it, players can prevent them from acting on their turn and lower their defense. Hitting weaknesses will deplete the stagger gauge more quickly. If a character staggers an enemy, they are granted an extra action at the end of the turn, and if all enemies are staggered, then it triggers a sweeping stagger, which grants all party members an extra action.

By completing character events during the game, players will obtain items called visions, which are crystallised essences of those characters. Equipping them to party members boosts their stats and unlocks new abilities. Each character can only equip one vision at a time. If players trigger a sweeping stagger, they can use a powerful technique called a Resonance, specific to one of the visions they have equipped. After a character learns an ability from a vision, they are able to equip it even when they activate a different vision, though only a certain number of abilities can be equipped at once, based on the character’s cost limit.

In addition, players can find vision crystal sanctums scattered across the world, which let players obtain visions of heroes from across the Final Fantasy series. Summons called espers can also be found by completing certain side quests. Espers require a large amount of MP to summon, but will fight alongside the party for three turns, unleashing a powerful finishing move when they disappear.
