At the expense of being a know-it-all, Pokémon does predate Digimon by about a year. Pokémon Red and Green came out in Japan in February 1996, and the first Digimon virtual pet came out in Japan in June 1997. There were even some prototype Digimon designs that weren’t used because they resembled Pokémon too much. I think in the USA, the Digimon V-pets came out before the Pokémon games and anime by at least a few months, but I can’t find any exact release date for the V-pets in the US.
As for the question of the week, at least for me, my preferred “brain-dead, low-stakes game” is Phantasy Star Online. I’m not sure if I’d suggest that, but I do like to mindlessly hack monsters to pieces once in a while.
I think the Pétanks in Clair Obscur are actually a reference to the game of ‘pétanque’, where players throw metal balls toward a small wooden ball.
(I tried to come up with an answer for the QOTW, but couldn’t think of anything.)
