New Release Round-Up (March 9, 2023)

Welcome to RPGamer’s new release round-up. In this column we look to provide our readers with details on all of the RPGs released over the week. Please note we do not currently include Early Access releases where the game is still in development.


Knights of Pen and Paper 3

Turn-based RPG Knights of Pen and Paper 3 is the latest entry in the off-beat pixel-graphic Pen and Paper series, which follows a party of tabletop RPG players as they embark on an adventure led by their game master. The game features an upgraded character creation system, new prestige classes that combine the skills of two basic classes, a new skill system, and a village-building element.


Mato Anomalies

Futuristic dystopian RPG Mato Anomalies puts players in the role of the detective Doe and exorcist Gram in the metropolis of Mato. They aim to uncover the secrets behind an invasion of supernatural creatures. It features a mixture of investigation sections with Doe and dungeon-crawling sections with Gram.


Metal Dogs

Platform: Nintendo Switch (previously released on PC)

Metal Max spin-off action roguelike Metal Dogs stars Pochi the battle dog. Players lead their battle dog through a dungeon that changes with each run, fighting against hostile machines, including the powerful WANTED. Players can pick one of three breeds of dog: Pochi the Shiba Inu, Bell the Doberman, and Bonanza the Bulldog, picking up new weapons and armor as they progress through the dungeon. Record of Agarest War

Tactical RPG Record of Agarest War features tactical battles as players travel between different locations in its fantasy world. It sees players controlling multiple generations of protagonists through its “Soul Breed” system, where the current protagonist is able to form a relationship with and marry one of their female companions, with their offspring becoming the next protagonist. The game received a prequel titled Record of Agarest War Zero, as well as standalone follow-up Record of Agarest War 2 and spin-off Record of Agarest War: Mariage.


Romancelvania

Romancelvania is a hybrid of dating sim and Metroidvania that puts players in the role of playboy vampire Drac, who is roped by the Grim Reaper into participating in a reality dating show with the promise to rebuild Drac’s castle. He recruits the most eligible monsters from across Transylvania, getting them to move into his party mansion, while defeating all of the foes he encounters along the way.


Sanctuary Saga

Party-based RPG Sanctuary Saga tasks players with taking their party through four different biomes, defeating the monsters and handling the threats that lie within. The game has a row-based skill system that ensures combat focuses on row management and positioning, with each hero having six unique skills available. It also features its own relationship system, where players need to maintain the bonds between the party, or members may refuse to fight.


The Last Spell

Platform: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch
Publisher: The Arcade Crew

The Last Spell takes place in a world decimated by a monster-creating mist that plagues the land. The last remnants of humanity are backed into a corner, and players are tasked with defending the last of the mages as they prepare a spell that will banish all magic from the world. The game features a day-night cycle where players use the daytime to build defences, set traps, or train up replacements to lost forces before fending off a night assault of hundreds of enemy creatures. It had been in Early Access since 2021.


The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition

Platform: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S (previously released on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch)

The Outer Worlds is set in a corporate colony in the planetary system of Halcyon and features first-person exploration and combat, with players able to use “Tactical Time Dilation” to slow time down, as well as branching dialogue, a companion system, and a setting heavily influenced by player decisions. The Spacer’s Choice Edition includes the Murder on Eridanos and Peril on Gorgon DLC, plus better graphics, improved performance, additional animations, and higher-resolution environments, as well as an increased level cap. Those who own the original game and both DLC on PC, PlayStation 4, or Xbox One will be able to upgrade to the Spacer’s Choice Edition on the relevant console or storefront for $9.99.
