Octopath Traveler II Introduces Ochette, Castti

Square Enix released new media and details for the upcoming Octopath Traveler II. The latest update introduces Ochette and Castti, the final two playable characters in the game, who join Hikari, Agnea, Partitio, Osvald, Throné and Temenos. It also provides some details about the game’s structure and side stories.

Ochette is a beastling hunter who resides on the island of Toto’haha, which lies in the ocean to the southeast of the continent of Solistia. The beastlings have occasional run-ins with the human islanders, but by and large her life has been fairly carefree. However, an event known as the Night of the Scarlet Moon is approaching, and Ochette is tasked with finding the Creatures of Legend in order to protect the island. Ochette is given this task by her master and leader of the beastlings, Juvah, and is initially accompanied by lājackal Akalā and malamaowl Mahina, who act as siblings.

Ochette’s Path Actions that she can use during exploration and in town are Provoke and Befriend. Provoke can be used during the day to challenge townspeople to battle, while Befriend can be used at night alongside a requisite item to bring townspeople along with her, during which time they can be summoned to combat. Her unique Talents are Capture and Prepare. Capture allows her to capture monsters, which can then be summoned in a future battle, giving Ochette access to additional abilities and elements. If not used in battle, Prepare allows these monsters to be turned into useful items. Finally, her Latent Power is Animal Instincts, accessible when the relevant meter fills up in combat, which allows her to access special skills that do not consume SP.

Meanwhile, Castti Florenz is an apothecary, whose story begins in a port town in the Harborlands after being discovered adrift at sea. She is suffering from amnesia and pieces together her identity from her satchel and apothecary skills. Her connections are shrouded in mystery, but she is assisted by Malaya, a traveling apothecary who is impressed by Castti’s skills despite her amnesia. The Harborlands in southern Solistia include the major port town of Canalbrine. It has a colossal lighthouse that can be seen from far away, and its church is also an important hub for many of those spreading the teachings of the Sacred Flame.

Castti’s Path Actions are Inquire and Soothe. Inquire allows Castti to obtain information from townspeople during the day, while Soothe allows her to allay others’ pain get them to sleep provided she has the required item. Her Concoct Talent lets her combine multiple ingredients during combat to create restorative or damaging compounds, that can have effects such as healing the entire party, inflicting status ailments or breaking opponents. Her Latent Power, Every Drop Counts, lets her use Concoct without using up some of the ingredients.

Octopath Traveler II sees players selecting an initial character before venturing out through Solistia, where they will be able to encounter and player through the stories of the other playable characters. Each tale has a different structure, which can include multiple objective that players can tackle in different orders. For example, Throné can decide whether to chase Mother or Father first, which will send her to different towns, while Partitio can either follow the story objective or seek out commerce and treasure opportunities. In Ochette’s case, she has to choose which of Akalā or Mahina follows her on her journey.

The game also includes numerous side stories on top of the eight main character tales. There can be multiple ways of progressing these stories using different Path Actions. Players will have the option to fast-forward through event scenes, adjust the automatic text speed, and alter the speed of combat.

Octopath Traveler II is being developed for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch and is set to release on February 24, 2023. The game tells a new story and, like its predecessor, follows the intertwined stories of eight protagonists, each with their own class. Players select one of the protagonists to start their journey, eventually crossing paths with the other heroes and recruiting them to the party, after which they can play through the new recruits’ stories.
