Final Fantasy XVI Launching Summer 2023

During Sony’s latest State of Play presentation, Square Enix revealed a new trailer for the latest mainline Final Fantasy title, Final Fantasy XVI. The three-minute video, viewable below, includes the first look at the game’s action combat system, hints at multiple story elements, and the reveal of a summer 2023 release window on PlayStation 5.

Final Fantasy XVI is being developed by Square Enix’s Business Division III with Naoki Yoshida (Final Fantasy XIV) acting as producer,  Hiroshi Takai (Final Fantasy XIV, The Last Remnant) acting as director, and Masayoshi Soken (Final Fantasy XIV) composing the game’s music. The game is set on the land of Valisthea, which is dotted with Mothercrystals, towering structures that spread aether. There are six main powers, with the uneasy peace between them faltering as a Blight emerges, while incredibly powerful beings called Eikons reside within people called Dominants, who are able to call upon their power.

The game’s main protagonist is Clive Rosfield. The eldest son of the Archduke of Rosaria, he was expected to become the Dominant of the Phoenix Eikon but instead becomes involved with the dark Eikon Ifrit. Other Eikons shown in the trailer are Titan, Garuda, Ramuh, Shiva, Odin, and Bahamut. Square Enix followed up the trailer release by providing details on the Dominants of Titan and Garuda. Hugo Kupka is the Permanent Economic Adviser of the Dhalmekian Republic and the Dominant of Titan. Previously an unknown foot soldier, he has swiftly become the nation’s most powerful man. Benedikta Harman is the Dominant of Garuda and one of the Kingdom of Waloed’s best intelligence agents. The company also confirmed the following senior development staff:
