Kickstarter Check-In: Whalefall

Publisher and developer Whitethorn Games has begun a Kickstarter campaign for Whalefall. The game is a turn-based monster-taming RPG inspired by a variety of JRPGs with visual novel and strategy elements.

Whalefall takes place on the fantasy world of Ostfeld, where Skywhales roam the skies. Every century, when a whale’s life comes to its natural end, it falls to the Baleen Wastes where conflicts over its valuable remains break out. In the time of the game, however, things play out differently to normal as Queen Lucretia and the Stoneshield Legion develop a way to shoot down a Skywhale in their effort to take control over all of Ostfeld.

The game follows Coty, a young recruit who finds themselves thrust into the role of head of the Riverwatch Forces as they attempt to stem the machinations of the Stoneshield Legion across the three-act story. The game features turn-based battles with a “preparation system” designed to reward players for strategic thinking and anticipating enemy moves. It also features strategic combat where players command the Riverwatch Forces on hex-based maps to complete missions such as capturing a fort or defending Riverwatch. The game will also let players build relationships and potentially find romance with numerous characters from diverse races.

Whitethorn Games is looking for $50,000 in funding for Whalefall, with the campaign set to run until April 15, 2022. Those who pledge at least $12 will receive a digital copy of the game, which is in development for PC and major consoles and is currently planned to release in late 2023.
