Lapis Re Abyss to Be Titled Lapis x Labyrinth Internationally, More Details Revealed

NIS America has announced that recently announced title Lapis Re Abyss will be known internationally as Lapis x Labyrinth. The news does not constitute a localisation announcement for the game, which is currently confirmed only for release in Japan and southeast Asia.

Prior to the title announcement, Nippon Ichi Software revealed plenty of details and screenshots for the game, as well as its debut trailer. An action RPG, Lapis x Labyrinth takes place in a rural town that previously acted as a base for those attempting to find a supposed “Golden Forest” where the trees produce gold. Nowadays, the town is almost deserted but one last group of adventurers arrives to search the surrounding woodland.

Players can select from eight different classes — Hunter, Necromancer, Shielder, Maid, Gunner, Wizard, Destroyer, and Bishop — to make up their four-person party, with limited customisation options on the hair color and voice of the members. The game features a “DANGO” formation, where one member is the full-body leader and the other three take the form of heads stacked onto top of the leader. The leader is the character that attacks, and players can swap out the leader, at which point the head above becomes the leader, and the former leader moves to the top of the stack. The status of each member is shown at the top of the screen.

Players can also use an Assist Order to have one of the heads act out of turn. This sees the leader throw the head immediately above them, becoming invulnerable and turning into a full-body character for a single attack. After this, the head returns to the top of the stack. There is also an Extra Order action available that sees all three heads thrown by the leader for a set of simultaneous attacks. Finally, a Fever Mode sees the party become invulnerable for a brief time while enemies drop an assortment of gems. These gems are used in a bonus mini-game from which players can earn rewards such as extra attack power or boost item drop-rates. All of these actions require their relevant gauges to be sufficiently filled.

Lapis x Labyrinth is split into various stages of different environments, starting from the Sea of Trees. As players progress through the game, they will unlock new routes to explore. Newly unlocked routes generally increase in difficulty, but will also provide better items for players. Each level features a boss fight at the end.

Lapis x Labyrinth is being developed for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. The game is set to be released in Japan on November 29, 2018.
