Vaewolf Preview
Vaewolf looks to have all of the requisite parts for a very exciting action roguelite.
Developer Milky Tea and publisher Megabit have unveiled supernatural action roguelite Vaewolf. Ahead of its reveal, RPGamer had the opportunity to attend a virtual press brief, learn more about the game, and see an early build in action. The game is set to release on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2 in 2027.
Vaewolf is set in an alternate version of the Lake District in Viking era England. Players control a young elf whose family is slaughtered by a clan of Viking werewolves. They manage to survive, afflicted by the werewolf curse, and are found and taken in by a vampire elder. They are trained to become a master bowman, before their mastery also grants the opportunity to gain vampiric powers and become the legendary day-walking Vaewolf, able to freely transform as they embark on a quest of vengeance to defeat Bloodaxe, the Viking clan’s leader.
The game sees players embarking on runs that take them through three distinct regions: Eskdale Forest, the Underworld, and Scafell Pike. Each location is made up of a series of map encounters where players take on waves of enemies, with players freely switching between elf, vampire, and werewolf forms from the start. The elf uses their bow and speed to be able to hit enemies from a distance, the vampire is great at AoE attacks, and the werewolf uses its raw power for close-combat brawling. Players choose a basic, charged, and tactical attack for each form, with each ability able to be upgraded and altered using runes during a run, letting them tailor a loadout to their preferred play style.
Combat is very high-tempo and built around momentum, rotating between forms, and chaining together abilities. As players deal damage, they fill their Wrath meter, which grants passive bonuses such as greater speed. If they get hit, then the Wrath meter drains; however, it is converted into Rebound, granting defensive buffs instead. If players do manage to fill their Wrath meter all the way, then they can unleash a powerful special attack.
When players are defeated, their undead nature means they are spat back out from the afterlife and back to the hub town of Ravenglass. Here players can use different facilities to gain permanent upgrades and prepare for a new run. Avery the vampire trainer lets players spend bloodstones on new weapons and abilities, a pagan woman grants permanent upgrades for returning her stolen mead, and a captured Viking lets players test out new abilities and practice their skills.
After players defeat a map encounter, they are given a choice for the next map, potentially choosing the type of reward for a combat encounter, whether they encounter a trader, or a free opportunity to heal. There are two primary rewards for improving the character during a run: runes and trinkets. Runes will modify the behaviour of an attack, such as adding a status effect, while trinkets offer universal passive bonuses, such as granting a brief attack buff whenever changing forms. The game appears to include a variety of enemies that will attack the player in different ways, including with status effects, and have their own strengths and weaknesses, further helping to illustrate the need to keep swapping between forms.
The game’s setting of the Lake District is brought about by the developer’s location in nearby Liverpool, with many of its team spending time in the fells of Cumbria on holiday, including some rooms that feature inspiration from specific real-life locations. The visuals have a distinct comic book feel that helps it stand out from other roguelites, blending inspiration from HergĂ© and Mike Mignola with plenty of colour and heavy black lines, which seems to work well with its Viking-techno soundtrack and heavy sound effects. Progressing through a region has a pleasing artistic evolution as well, with the Eskdale Forest getting darker and more eerie.
Vaewolf looks to have all of the requisite parts for a very exciting action roguelite. The game looks to have some very robust build opportunities with its powerful rune upgrades, while the combat looks like it will greatly reward those who are able to master its momentum and chain abilities and forms together. Players will be able to dive into its supernatural revenge quest early next year.
