There haven’t been that many times when I had to decide between two versions of a game on cross generational system. Which version I choose depends on circumstances. Because I obtained a Wii at launch, getting The Legend of Zelda for the Wii rather than the GameCube seemed like a no-brainer. More recently, though, while it’ll likely run a lot better on the Switch 2, I’m getting Pokémon Legends Z-A on Switch 1 because I don’t intend to get the newer console yet and I’m pretty tolerate of performance issues.
If there is a game releasing on a platform I already own, I don’t see any benefit in acquiring the newest console only for that game. However, there is an exception tied to whether or not I can earn trophies. For example, Super Robot Wars Y released on Nintendo Switch that I already own. However, I am not interested in this version at all and prefer to wait until I acquire a PlayStation 5, on which I can earn trophies.
