My ability to create characters is charitably described as “crap” so at least Baldur’s Gate 3 has “Down By The River” playing in the background. If I’m going to spend two hours agonizing over cantrips at least it’ll give me an earworm to listen to while I’m doing it.
Oddly, my favorite character creator isn’t all that in-depth or robust, but it’s the one I spend the most time on and have the fondest memories of. It’s the character creator from Phantasy Star Online, specifically the one from Episodes I & II. I spent so much time trying to recreate favorite characters from other media with it (to varying levels of success), and I liked how it used sliders to create hair color rather than having a set list of colors.
I have a love-hate relationship with character creators. I can spend hours fiddling around with them, but that just makes them massive progress stoppers! And how are you supposed to build a decent character for a game you haven’t played yet? Is a dex build going to send me down a dead end? Do I need charisma and constitution? I tried Skyrim this year for the first time and restarted it about four times with four different characters. And I’ve already decided I’m going to restart when I go back to it. So I guess that’s my favourite – Skyrim. Or OG Baldurs Gate (not played 3 yet), as who doesn’t love endlessly rerolling for higher stats?
