Penny Blood: Hellbound Gets Its Second Early Access Update
Developer and publisher Natsume-Atari released a new Early Access update for its hack-and-slash roguelike Penny Blood: Hellbound, which is co-developed with Yukikaze and Studio Wildrose. This new update includes an online multiplayer mode, a new area, five new weapons, four new NPCs, new side quests and cutscenes, and more.
The online multiplayer mode allows the player to team-up with up to three other players to defeat waves of monsters in a location called the Dimensional Rift. Meanwhile, the Overworldly Laboratory is the new and fourth main area of the game. It is a place filled with space-time distortions, which introduces new enemies and bosses. It also gives the opportunity to meet two new NPCs that can join the player’s hideout: a tentacled being named Nihila who has a love for tea and manage the new Subspace Tearoom facility, and the demonic marquis Sabnack attached to the Forbidden Trapdoor blacksmith facility.
Five weapons are available to use for the five playable characters at the Forbidden Trapdoor blacksmith facility: Crimson Rain (Clara), Greataxe (Axeman), Säbelzähne (Sariel), Malice Cube Σ (Dr. Eugene), and Serrated Fans (Saltykova). Players can also unlock two new Buddies to aid them in battles: the self-proclaimed greatest fiend in Japan, Dosetsu Igarashi, who uses rope bondage to dominate his enemies, and nurse Jane Toppan, whose sweet-mannered facade contrasts with her ability to attack with various syringes.
Penny Blood: Hellbound acts as a prequel to Penny Blood, which is the upcoming spiritual successor to the Shadow Hearts series. It takes place in the 1920s and follows six powerful anarchists known as the Hellhounders, each equipped with their own weapons, attacks, and skills. Players can select two out of the six characters at any time, as they attempt to break free from prison and solve the mystery of their imprisonment at the hands of the enigmatic Celestial Rainbow. Upon death, players are teleported back to prison with Malice, which can be used to learn new skills and gain power-ups. Other features in the game include befriending NPCs that appear exclusively in dungeons and aid players in combat till they die; the ability to equip up to three purchasable accessories simultaneously, which can be leveled up after clearing each stage while equipped; and a gambling game called Psycho Hanafuda, where players can earn additional currency through timed button presses.
