Penny Blood: Hellbound Announced
Yukikaze, Studio Wildrose, and Natsume Atari have announced Penny Blood: Hellbound. The game is an action roguelite companion title that acts as a prequel to Yukikaze’s upcoming Shadow Hearts spiritual successor Penny Blood. In a similar setup to Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising, the game is being primarily developed by Natsume Atari, with Studio Wildrose providing creative vision.
Penny Blood features a 1920s gothic horror setting and follows an investigator named Matthew Farrell across America, Europe, and Asia in a world twisted by cosmic horrors. Penny Blood: Hellbound, meanwhile, tells a side story that puts players in control of the Hellhounders, Matthew’s anarchist rivals, as they aim to escape the otherwordly prison of Mictlan.
There are six playable characters, each with their own set of attacks, weapons, and skills. Players can switch between two selected characters on the fly, with the game also including co-op in the full release. Each run through the game helps unlock power-ups, skills, and other upgrades. Other gameplay elements include the Malice system, which provides greater rewards the more blood players spill, and “bloodsurfing”, where players can use spilled blood for momentum-based attacks. The game’s soundtrack is primarily composed by Yoshitaka Hirota (Shadows Hearts and Penny Blood) with guest contributions from Noriyuki Iwadare (Lunar and Grandia)
Penny Blood: Hellbound will receive a closed beta release on December 14, 2023, available via Steam to backers on Backerkit. The closed beta will feature around ten hours of gameplay content. An Early Access release will then follow in February 2024, ahead of a full release in the summer of 2024.
