Final Fantasy XVI: The Rising Tide Expansion Launching Next Month

Square Enix announced that its second expansion for Final Fantasy XVIThe Rising Tide — will release for PlayStation 5 on April 18, 2024. The expansion will be available individually for $19.99, or included as part of the $24.99 Expansion Pass along with first expansion Echoes of the Fallen.

The Rising Tide sees the hideaway receiving a request to rescue the Dominant of Leviathan, the thought long-lost Eikon of Water. It sees Clive travel to the hidden land of Mysidia, where he uncovers the history of a forgotten people. The expansion includes a level cap raise to level 60 in Story Focused Mode and Action Focused Mode, or level 110 in Final Fantasy Mode (New Game+), and also grants Clive the ability to use Leviathan’s Eikonic Abilities, as well as other possible new powers.

 

 

The expansion includes additional side stories set in Mysidia that provide more information about the land and its people. Players will also encounter new threats, including Final Fantasy XVI’s take on the series’ recurring Tonberry enemies, which are found in a set of ruins called the Aire of Hours. Asp layers might expect, there is also a new Eikonic boss fight.

In addition, The Rising Tide will add new endgame content titled Kairos Gate. This mode is unlocked after completing both The Rising Tide and the main game. Players venture into a virtual underworld, fighting waves of foes. There are twenty stages of increasing difficulty, with points awarded for battle performance towards a global leaderboard as well as weapons and materials available to upgrade Clive.

 

 

On the same date as the expansion, a free Ver. 1.30 update will also be released for all players. The update includes a Quick Complete quest function that returns players directly to the quest giver, icon updates for important character quests, the ability for players to save up to five unique Feat and Ability sets, ability and accessory adjustments, a customisable button layout option, and more.

The latest mainline entry in the long-running series, Final Fantasy XVI is more heavily action-focused and released for PlayStation 5 in June 2023, with a PC version currently in development. It is set in the high fantasy land of Valisthea, which is dotted with Mothercrystals, towering structures that spread aether. People have built up around the crystals, using the aether for magic and to help them live in comfort. Valisthea is home to incredibly powerful beings called Eikons, Final Fantasy XVI’s variant on the series’s summons, with protagonist Clive Rosfield becoming involved with the dark Eikon Ifrit.
