Bungie Unveils Destiny 2’s The Final Shape Expansion

Bungie held a new Destiny 2 Showcase event, during which is unveiled Destiny 2s newest expansion, The Final Shape. The expansion, which acts as the final part of the game’s “Light and Darkness Saga”, will release for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S on February 27, 2024. Bungie also marked the launch of its new Season of the Witch content and provided details on its plans for future seasonal content that will follow The Final Shape. The full presentation can be viewed below alongside a variety of trailers.

The Final Shape sees players take on their main antagonist the Witness alongside companions Ikora Rey, Commander Zavala, and the mysteriously returned Cayde-6. The campaign takes players into the heart of the Traveler in a new location called the Pale Heart and will culminate in a new raid that will be release in March 2024. The Pale Heart is said to be shaped by both the Witness and the Guardians and will feature callbacks to previous events and locations, including a version of Destiny’s original Tower.

Gameplay additions in The Final Shape include three new Super abilities and Aspects — Void for Titans, Solar for Warlocks, and Arc for Hunters — as well as a new weapon subfamily and classic returning weapons from the first Destiny game. Players will come across a new enemy type, the Subjugators, which use Stasis and Strand powers.

Bungie revealed some other changes coming to the game over the next year. An improved Power system will let players take part in activities together more easily, while a new Fireteam Finder feature will arrive in November 2023. There will also be PvP updates including a new map, game mode, and Checkmate modifier.

Further changes will come in the new Episode content format. Episodes will begin in March 2024 and replace the game’s current seasonal content model. Three Episodes are planned to release in 2024 — titled “Echoes”, “Revenant”, and “Heresy” — and will each be a standalone story told in three Acts exploring the aftermath of the events in The Final Shape.

The Final Shape is available to pre-order now in multiple editions. The $49.99 Standard Edition grants access to The Final Shape and its subsequent raid, plus the “Echoes” Episode, an Exotic Ghost, and an Expansion Emblem. The $99.99 Destiny 2: The Final Shape + Annual Pass Edition grants access to The Final Shape, its subsequent raid, all three 2024 Episodes, and two additional dungeons, as well as an Exotic Sparrow, an Exotic weapon, and further in-game items and bonuses. Finally, the $275 physical Collector’s Edition includes the contents of the Destiny 2: The Final Shape + Annual Pass Edition, plus a replica model of the original Tower from Destiny with LED lights and sounds, Vanguard mentor figurines, a Vanguard mission dossier and patch, an autograph book, and a digital version of the expansion’s soundtrack. A $175 version without the Destiny 2: The Final Shape + Annual Pass Edition is also available.
