Kristala Begins Kickstarter Campaign

Developer Astral Clocktower Studios has begun its Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign for action RPG Kristala. The game follows an anthropomorphic feline warrior, known as an Anagativa, on the planet Ailur. The eponymous gift of Kristala gives them the power to communicate with sacred Magic Kristals, and they go on a quest to become one of the world’s most powerful warriors while searching for the source of a curse that has transformed the world’s creatures into monstrosities.

The Anagativa evolved from regular cats into sapient creatures when magic appeared on the world of Ailur. There are six clans that players can select between for their character, with each clan having its own spell tree focusing on a particular branch of magic. The game’s combat is inspired by titles such as Sekiro, Assassin’s Creed, and Nioh, with players able to block, dash, and deflect incoming attacks while dealing damage with light and heavy attacks as well as spells.

The game will include a balance meter in lieu of stamina, which drains when players parry or are hit with an attack. Enemies whose balance is broken will be open for a special takedown attack, while players will be left staggered and open themselves to a critical attack if their balance meter drains. There will be a variety of weapon types available, with each type having its own special talents available to unlock. The game’s spells include single- and multiple-target damage spells, buffs, healing, and an ultimate spell for each clan that it tied to a special meter. Spells use mana, which is restored by engaging in melee combat.

Kristala will also feature a mixture of traversal skills, including jumping, climbing, tightrope balance, and wall running. New skills are unlocked as the game progresses, granting access to new pathways and areas. Players can also unlock other cat-like abilities including stealth mechanics, as well as prepare tools and potions.

The Kickstarter campaign has already passed its $23,000 funding goal and is set to run until August 17, 2023. The game is planned to release initially as a Steam Early Access title on PC in 2024, with Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S versions also in development. Those who pledge at least $20 will receive a digital copy of the game as part of their backer rewards. A demo is currently available to try out on Steam.
