Ys X: Nordics Introduces More Characters, Mana Actions

Nihon Falcom released more details for Ys X: Nordics, the newest entry in the long-running Ys action RPG series. The update introduces four more characters, as well as its new Mana Actions gameplay system.

In addition to main protagonist Adol and Clara, the game will also feature Adol’s long-time partner Dogi. Aged 23 at the start of the game, Dogi has decided to leave his previous life of thievery behind and joins Adol on his journey. On the game’s adventure in the northern sea’s Obelia Bay, Adol comes across new characters including Glen Berge. An 18-year-old member of the town of Carnack’s vigilante corps, he is enthusiastic and the eldest son of the mayor, though doesn’t like this being brought up.

Meanwhile, 16-year-old Rosalind Lazveli is the poster girl of Carnack’s Lazveli Tavern. She is well-mannered and mature for her age, and has become close friends with Glen and final newly-introduced character Cruz. Also 16 years old, Cruz Carpent is the heir to the wealthy Carpent Company, he is well read and quiet but also takes initiative, including an incident as a child when he tried to stow away on a ship.

Ys X: Nordics features new special Mana Actions. These are activated by utilising the local seafaring people’s power of mana after obtaining special antiques. As players discover special tablets across Odelia Bay, they can strengthen these abilities. One example is the Mana String, which lets players use magical string to swing themselves or pull objects.

Players can also use Mana Ride and jump onto the Grimble Board, which lets players glide over water as well as mid-air wind paths. There are also special wind pools that can launch the Grimble Board high up into the air to surpass gaps that regular jumps cannot. Finally, the Mana Burst is a charged attack that utilises Adol’s fire element or Carja’s ice element to attack enemies. It can also be used to create new exploration paths, such as burning away ivy or creating footholds.

Ys X: Nordics is planned to release for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch in Japan some time in 2023, with no announcement made regarding a western release. The game takes place between the events of Ys I & II and Ys: Memories of Celceta.
