Kickstarter Check-In: Keylocker, Hero.EXE

RPGamer’s ad hoc Kickstarter Check-In feature returns for a look at two ongoing crowdfunding campaigns. This edition features Moonana’s Keylocker, as well as Top Hat Studios and Mystery Egg Games’ Hero.EXE.

Virgo Versus the Zodiac developer Moonana has begun a Kickstarter campaign for its latest project, Keylocker. The game is a cyberpunk turn-based rhythm RPG and takes place on Saturn, where music has been outlawed for the past 141 years. Keylocker follows B0B0, who is a Doppelganger, twins that are born to be perfect fits for particular societal castes. However, B0B0 fights against her position in the lowest caste, forming her own band in rebellion against the Saturnian Satellites that act as the ultimate law.

Keylocker’s combat is turn-based with real-time execution using rhythm-based inputs. The game features four initial class options, which branch out into six more. In addition to combat, classes determine available NPCs, quests, and interactions. The game features multiple endings based on player decisions, and includes a dating system where B0B0 can offer gifts to other characters to unlock events and build romantic or platonic relationships with them.

Keylocker is being developed for PC and is currently expected to release in 2023. A demo is available to download via Steam. Moonana is looking for $35,000 in funding with the Kickstarter campaign set to run until October 23, 2021. Those who pledge at least $15 will receive a digital copy of the game as part of their backer rewards.

Top Hat Studios and Mystery Egg Games’ Hero.EXE is a combination of action RPG, collectible card game, and visual novel. The game lists inspirations including Mega Man Battle Network, Hearthstone, and Fire Emblem: Awakening.

Hero.EXE is set in another world that houses a digital world known as The Grid. The Grid is home to digital beings called A.V.A.s (Artificial Virtual Assistants). Players choose a partner A.V.A., building up a relationship during their adventures. The game uses a real-time, grid-based battle system where players move their A.V.A. around to avoid attacks and hazards. During compile phases, players can pause time and draw cards from their customised deck to create code combinations to attack.

Hero.EXE is being developed for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch and is currently planned to release in early 2024. The Kickstarter campaign has already passed its $20,000 funding goal and is set to run until October 21, 2021. Those who pledge at least $20 will receive a digital copy of the game as part of their backer rewards.
