New Release Round-Up (August 12, 2021)

Welcome to RPGamer’s new release round-up. In this column we look to provide our readers with details on all of the RPGs released over the week. Please note we do not currently include Early Access releases.


Black Book

Black Book is a card-based RPG adventure. It puts players in the role of Vasilisa, a would-be witch who gives up magic to be with her love. When her betrothed dies mysteriously, she sets out to find the Black Book, an artifact believed to grant a wish if all of its seals were to be broken. Along the way she will encounter numerous creatures inspired by Slavic myth, explore the countryside and its people, and summon demons to aid her in battle.


Boyfriend Dungeon

Dungeon-crawling dating-sim RPG Boyfriend Dungeon features seven different weapons that transform into humans (and a cat), with two more set to be added as DLC after launch. Players earn cash by using these weapons to slay creatures in “the dunj”, using that cash to go on dates with them and build up their relationships.


Cardaclysm: Shards of the Four

Cardaclysm: Shards of the Four is a roguelike deck-builder that sees players having to battle the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and their hordes of minions after a dark wizard accidentally summons them. Over 240 cards and 40 artifacts are available for players to customize their runs as they traverse six biomes in search of keys to unlock the fight against Death itself.


Curious Expedition 2

Platform: Nintendo Switch (previously released on PC)

Curious Expedition 2 is a narrative roguelike set in a reimagined late 19th century. Mysterious islands have begun to appear and vanish with explorer clubs funding expeditions to bring back treasures to the 1889 World Fair in Paris. The game features procedurally-generated worlds and storytelling with players required to manage their expedition’s resources and sanity.


Fort Triumph

Platform: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch (previously released on PC, Mac, Linux)

Tactical RPG Fort Triumph looks to combine XCOM-style tactical combat with the exploration of Heroes of Might and Magic. The game includes a campaign with three story acts as well as a skirmish mode pitting players against up to seven AI opponents or friends in local hot seat multiplayer.


Garden Story

Platform: PC, Mac, Nintendo Switch

Garden Story puts players in the role of Concord the grape, the newly appointed guardian of Spring Hamlet. Concord has to deal with problems including a mysterious Rot that is affecting the previously flourishing island the village is on. However, he will be able to call upon the aid of those he has helped and made friends with. Players engage in action combat, traverse dungeons, gather materials to craft upgrades, and help the island’s other Greenlings to unlock memories that grant permanent stat boosts.


Godfall

Platform: PlayStation 4 (previously released on PC, PlayStation 5)

Action RPG Godfall sees players taking on groups of enemies before engaging in head-to-head fights against bosses. The game features solo play as well as two- and three-player co-op, with enemies changing their behaviour to suit the current number of players. Those who own the Ascended or Deluxe Editions of the game have access to the Fire & Darkness expansion included. The PlayStation 4 release comes alongside the game’s first expansion, Fire & Darkness.


Hades

Hades is an action roguelite RPG that puts players in the role of Zagreus as he repeatedly attempts to fight his way out of the Underworld. Each run of the game offers opportunities for unique story events and builds as players interact with gods like Zeus, Athena, and Poseidon. Permanent upgrades can also be obtained, making future runs easier. Those looking to learn more about Hades can check out Zack Webster’s review or its 2020 Game of the Year Award.


Library of Ruina

Platform: PC, Xbox One

Library of Ruina puts players in the role of the owner of a library. In order to obtain new books, players invite guests and battle them with the help of their librarians, with defeated guests turning into new books. Combat sees players using cards to influence combat, while dice rolls determine the outcomes of attacks.


Shadowverse: Champion’s Battle

Platform: Nintendo Switch

Shadowverse: Champion’s Battle is a spin-off to Cygames’ Shadowverse card game available on PC and mobile, and is based on its anime adaptation. Players control a transfer student at Tensei Academy who gets introduced to the Shadowverse card game by a classmate..


WitchSpring3 Re:Fine: The Story of Eirudy

Witch Spring3 Re:Fine follows Eirudy, a young girl who lives alone in a deep forest after evading a witch hunt. She ends up meeting an adventurer called Adrian, setting the game’s story into motion. It features a customisable magic system, turn-based combat, crafting, and multiple story paths.
