NEO: The World Ends with You Launching in July

Square Enix announced that NEO: The World Ends with You, its sequel to The World Ends with You, will launch worldwide for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch on July 27, 2021. The company also announced a PC version of the game, which will release sometime in summer 2021 via the Epic Games Store.

NEO: The World Ends with You’s main protagonist is Rindo, a young resident of Shibuya. Sensing that something is amiss during an otherwise normal day, he comes across a girl who identifies herself as a Reaper. Rindo plays along and decides to join in the Reaper’s Game, where participants fight monsters called Noise using superpowered Pins.

Rindo finds himself as the leader of a team called the Wicked Twisters that includes fellow players Fret, Nagi, and Minamimoto. Fret is Rindo’s classmate and has a happy-go-lucky attitude that lets him get along with others. Nagi is a college student who is often mistaken for being younger and is passionate about games. Minamimoto uses calculations to perceive potential futures and forces himself on the team after saving them.

Shiba has risen to becoming the current number one ranked Reaper in less than a year after his arrival in the Shibuya Underground and is the Master of the current Reaper’s Game. The game’s new trailer also introduces other players Susukichi, Tsugumi, Fuya, Kanon, and Motoi, as well as the Reapers Kariya, Uzuki, Coco, Kubo, Ayano, Kaie, Hishima, and Shoka. It also hints at the return of a certain character.

Like its predecessor, NEO: The World Ends with You takes players to numerous real-world landmarks in Shibuya, with event scenes using a comic book style. While exploring, players can scan their surroundings. This lets them see the thoughts of local residents, which can provide important information needed to progress, and to visualise the Noise, which will start chasing players if they get too close and will initiate combat when touched. The game features team battles, with each member of the team assigned a Pin. Players simply press the corresponding button to activate a Pin. Players can choose their Pin loadouts from hundreds of potential Pins found throughout the game.

NEO: The World Ends with You is being directed by Hiroyuki Ito (Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy IX, Final Fantasy XII) with its soundtrack composed by Takeharu Ishimoto (The World Ends with You, Final Fantasy Type-0, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII), with original The World Ends with You co-director Tatsuya Kando acting as series director. It features character designs from Gen Kobayashi, Miki Yamashita, and Tetsuya Nomura.

  1. Shinjuku Reapers, hmm? Are they just in Shibuya for some reason, or does this mean part of the game takes place there?
Either way, I’m so excited for this!
