RPG Cast – Episode 523: “He’s Big Enough for Both of Us to Pet”

We’re all Pokécrazy this week, with Alex, Anna Marie, Chris, Kelley and Peter all discussing their Pokétales and where the series could go moving forward. Josh is the odd man out, but he’s got interesting demos to share instead, so it’s cool. Wait, wasn’t this supposed to be a short show?!

Question of the Week

QOTW – Favorite DS game would have to be Radiant Historia—though I agree with Kelley that the 3DS version takes an already amazing game and finds ways to improve upon it. RH has consistently ranked in my top 3 or 4 games of all time since I first played it in 2011.

Infinite Space is another title deserving mention. Despite a steep learning curve, the level of customization in the game is incredible.

Finally, Nostalgia deserves to be on the list. Airship combat was great, soundtrack was high quality and the game design was replete with old school charm.

QOTW: The World Ends With You in its DS incarnation is still a top five game of all time for me. There’s also the Pokemon games where I stan Platinum and the Black/White games, and Radiant Historia was my GOTY in 2011.

QoTW: My favorite DS games are a three-way tie between the Dragon Quest series, the Professor Layton series, and the Mario & Luigi series. I originally bought a DS specifically to play Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time.

Honorable mentions go to Picross DS and The Quest Trio for their hundreds of hours of puzzle-solving entertainment.

It’s worth noting that Picross DS has some puzzles that are far more difficult than ANY other Picross game’s puzzles, because they were intended to be solved with the assistance of an “overlay”, an in-game tool that has never been included in any Picross game since.

QotW: Another vote here for The World Ends With You – one of my all-time favourite games. If we’re looking beyond RPGs, I’ll also have to flag up Ghost Trick – for my money, the high point of visual novel/puzzle games on the system, even better than the Layton releases and Capcom’s own Ace Attorney series. Despite being very different games, both TWEWY and Ghost Trick show how the very best DS titles married visual flair and great storytelling with unusual gameplay mechanics.

  5. The World Ends with You is one of my most favorite games ever, and I prefer the two screen gameplay of the original version. Pokemon Black/White is my favorite Pokemon game on the DS, and I’m still not entirely sure if it’s my favorite in the series or Sun/Moon. The original Devil Survivor and Radiant Historia are fantastic, although the 3DS ports are superior.
