Valkyria Chronicles 4 Vehicles, R&D Detailed

Sega released some new information and screenshots for its upcoming tactical RPG Valkyria Chronicles 4. In addition to introducing three new characters, the company also provided details about the tank players will be able to use as well as the research and development systems for upgrading characters.

The first character introduced is Miles Abegg, mechanic and driver of said tank. Miles knows Squad E leader and main protagonist Claude from their military academy and generally gets along with everyone. The second character is Dan Bentley, who is also a mechanic and tank driver. His past is not known to others, but he has a great affinity for vehicles, especially his personal one. Finally there is Ronald Albee, the tank commander for Squad F. He is a loyal supporter of Squad F’s leader, and self-proclaimed rival of Claude, Minerva.

In Valkyria Chronicles 4, tanks have great attack and defense power, adding the ability to go places infantry cannot and help mobilise multiple infantry members. However, like in previous games in the series, they do have a conspicuous, blue-glowing radiator in the rear that is a significant weak point. Vehicles can also drive over cover-providing sandbags and do not automatically recover hit points each turn like other units can. They are also strong against anti-personnel mines, but naturally weak to anti-tank mines.

Armoured vehicles are a certain type of vehicle that can use the carry command to transport troops in safety. Multiple troops can board a vehicle at once, but armoured vehicles have weaker defenses than tanks. If an armoured vehicle is destroyed, all troops aboard it at the time will also retreat from the battlefield.

Tanks have three potential attack types: armour-piercing, high-explosive, and machine gun. Armour-piercing weapons are strong against other vehicles, high-explosive weapons are strong against groups of infantry, and machine guns are also strong agaisnt infantry with the advantage of automatically shooting at those who run within range. Armoured vehicles only have access to machine guns.

In order to upgrade their vehicles and infantry equipment, players use the research and development centre, using the funds received from missions. Newly researched infantry equipment is mass-produced, so players can give it to all of the particular class’ soldiers immediately, with some weapons geared to certain specialities, such as higher accuracy. Meanwhile, new vehicle equipment comes in both armour pieces and weapons. Each piece of equipment fills a certain number of slots, with each vehicle only having a certain number of slots to fill. Players can also place performance-boosting stickers on their main tank as well as changing its coating for a different bonus.

Valkyria Chonricles 4 is planned for release in Japan for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on March 21, 2018, with a Switch version arriving in summer 2018. The game is also set to be released for those same platforms in North America and Europe in 2018.
