FuRyu Announces Varlet, Releasing Internationally in August
Publisher FuRyu has announced new turn-based RPG Varlet. The game is planned to release internationally for PC, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch on August 28, 2025. It is being developed by Aquria, which developed many of the Sword Art Online titles and The Caligula Effect, and is written by Gakuto Mikumo (Asura Cryin’ and Strike the Blood novel series) and Ryutaro Ito (Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner, Monark).
Varlet is set in Kousei Academy, the first school to implement a cross-reality network called Johari. The network is used for everything from finding basic information and making purchases to serving as a social networking and messaging app. However, its usage has caused students’ desire for approval and attention to increase. Soon an urban legend begins that the system’s users disappear into otherworldly “Glitches”, with monsters inhabiting the “Glitches” replacing users in the real world.
The game’s main protagonist is a member of the Student Support Services (SSS), who discovers that the rumour is true, and some students have already been replaced. They must guide their friends and strengthen their bonds to protect the school from impending disaster, though the publisher states that getting too close to multiple people may lead to unexpected consequences.
The game uses a Triad Stats system, where player choices impact character progression. There are six attributes divided between Light and Dark Triad traits, which alter dialogue options and passive battle skills. Light Triad attributes follow morality, sympathy, and altruism, with Dark Triad attributes leans into Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and narcissism. FuRyu has released a “Triad Diagnosis” personality test on the game’s official website as part of its marketing for the game.
