Pokémon Legends: Z-A Introduces the Z-A Royale Competition

During the latest Nintendo Direct, The Pokémon Company released a new trailer for its upcoming RPG Pokémon Legends: Z-A. The three-minute trailer introduces the Z-A Royale competition, which sees trainers fighting each other at night in a battle zone created by cutting-edge holographic technology. Each trainer starts at Rank Z and aims to battle their way toward Rank A, at which point they may see a wish granted.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A takes place as Lumiose City is undergoing an urban redevelopment plan intended to “shape the city into a place that belongs to both people and Pokémon”. Players will choose from Chikorita, Tepig, or Totodile as their first partner Pokémon and use Hotel Z as their base while tackling various incidents around the city. The city is home to new “wild zones” that use cutting-edge technology to give wild Pokémon places to live in the city, where players can battle and catch them.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A will change up the series’ traditional turn-based combat with a new real-time combat where trainers and Pokémon move around in real-time and unleash moves when commanded. New gameplay mechanics include precise timing for using moves and when swapping out Pokémon, as actions will take different amounts of time to launch and impact different sized areas. The game will also see the reappearance of the Mega Evolution system introduced in Pokémon X/Y, which allows certain Pokémon to unleash greater power than their regular Evolutions. Pokémon Legends: Z-A is set to release for Nintendo Switch later this year.

Fascinated by the screens since I saw them, video games are a sorcery I quickly became obsessed with. This passion culminated with the discovery of the RPGs. At that time, they were likely the sole titles where story and world building mattered as much as gameplay. Now, I am writing about them, especially my favorite ones: the JRPGs!
