Pokémon Legends: Z-A Launching in Late 2025

The Pokémon Company held a new Pokémon Presents presentation, during which it provided more details for the upcoming Pokémon Legends: Z-A. A follow-up to 2021’s Pokémon Legends: Arceus, which provided a fully 3D experience set in the past of the Sinnoh region from Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, Pokémon Legends: Z-A returns players to Pokémon X and Ys Kalos region. The game will release for Nintendo Switch in late 2025.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A takes place as Lumiose City is undergoing an urban redevelopment plan intended to “shape the city into a place that belongs to both people and Pokémon”. Players will choose from Chikorita, Tepig, or Totodile as their first partner Pokémon and use Hotel Z as their base while tackling various incidents around the city. The city is home to new “wild zones” that use cutting-edge technology to give wild Pokémon places to live in the city, where players can battle and catch them.

Joining the protagonist are various new characters. Urbain or Taunie (depending on which appearance is chosen by the player for their character) lives and works at Hotel Z and will become a friend to the player. AZ is a very tall man who owns Hotel Z and claims to be three thousand years old. He is accompanied by Eternal Flower Floette, a special Floette who is also said to have lived for three thousand years. Meanwhile, Jett is the CEO of Quasartico Inc., which is driving Lumiose City’s development plan, and Vinnie is Jett’s secretary.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A will change up the series’ traditional turn-based combat with a new real-time combat where trainers and Pokémon move around in real-time and unleash moves when commanded. New gameplay mechanics include precise timing for using moves and when swapping out Pokémon, as actions will take different amounts of time to launch and impact different sized areas. The game will also see the reappearance of the Mega Evolution system introduced in Pokémon X and Y, which allows certain Pokémon to unleash greater power than their regular Evolutions.

Other announcements during the Pokémon Presents include the reveal of the new title Pokémon Champions. Developed by The Pokémon Works in collaboration with Game Freak, it is planned to release for Nintendo Switch and mobile platforms and will allow players to battle each other with Pokémon Home compatibility. There are also updates for Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket, the Pokémon Trading Card Game, and Pokémon Concierge, while Latin American Spanish support will be expanded to multiple titles, including Pokémon Legends: Z-A.
