Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven Introduces Characters, Systems

Square Enix released new screenshots and details for the upcoming Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven, its full remake of Super Famicom RPG Romancing SaGa 2. The update introduces a selection of new characters as well as providing more information on the game’s glimmer system, development and progression elements, and its free-form scenario.

Rather than featuring a single party, Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven sees players control a lineage of emperors in a long-running battle against the Seven Heroes of ancient myth. The update features seven new characters and their associated classes: Regulus, Rose, Shiyuan, Jubei, Natalia, Siero, and Thetis. Regulus and Rose are Freelance Mages conducting research at the Incantations Lab. Regulus is adept at hydrology and terrology, while Rose excels in pyrology and terrology. Shiyuan is a renowned Strategist from the Imperial University who is proficient at magic but has misgivings about the usage of umbrology. Jubei is a member of the Levante Guard — warriors from the east who swear fealty to the Emperor — and uses a style of swordplay passed down across generations from the Kingdom of Yauda.

Meanwhile, Natalie is a Diver from the town of Toba, which is situated on the westrn coast of the South Longit Sea, and helps to support the town’s economy. Siero is a Mole from a race that lives beneath the Savannah, but which has been pushed in near extinction by termites. He is very skilled at crafting a wide variety of items. Finally, Thetis is a Nereid who lives in the Ludon Highlands’s Lake Aqua. She is unhappy with the lake’s water condition and generally avoids people from the land.

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven makes use of the series’ glimmer system, which allows characters to automatically learn new techniques when fighting, while abilities that characters have managed to evade can be automatically evaded in future. Players can check the glimmer chart to see which techniques can be learnt by each character class. Each classes has different affinities, with learnable skills shown with a question mark icon while unobtainable skills for the class appear with a crossed icon. For example, the Vacuum Slash attack can be learned from the Whirlwind ability, while Rock Splitter can be learned from Twinstrike.

Formations also play a role in the game’s combat system, with Revenge of the Seven including new spells and formations from the original release. One such new spell is the hydrology spell Water Blast that hits a single foe; it can be upgraded to Water Blast II, which can be cast against a line of enemies and reduce their physical defence. Another is the terrology spell Pulverize, which slams a boulder into a foe. Meanwhile, new formations include Fanged Assault, which becomes available when a Mercenary class character is appointed Emperor and grants front units more physical attack but makes them easier to target. Volcanic Heart is available when a Salamander is made Emperor and gives significant boosts to offense with and defence against pyrology spells.

There are multiple progression and development systems and facilities in Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven. The Incantations Lab allows players to teach spells that have been learned using the glimmer system to other characters providing they meet the requirements. It also lets players develop spells combining multiple elements using old books found in the game. The Imperial University lets players do exams covering different subjects in the game, which rewards players with crafting materials and money, and also lets players listen to the original and updated soundtrack. Elsewhere, once developed, the Avalon Gardans encourage tourists to visit the capital, increasing imperial revenue, which is reflected in amount of money obtains from winning encounters. The gardens get more impressive as more battles are won.

Players can check the progression of the Empire’s weapon and elemental spell levels in the Imperial Standing menu. As players use weapons and spells, the levels are increased. In turn, this increases the base level and strength of the recruitable retinue members from taverns. The menu also displays enemy strength, imperial revenue, and battle records. The Imperial Chronicles also provides a record of everything done in the story, plus current quests objectives, and can be used to select which quest to mark on the world map and field. Also returning element in the series is the character Mr. S. Players can find him all over the world, and when they do they collect stickers that lead to rewards including increased revenue, reduced construction time, revealed treasure locations, and more.

Finally, the update shows how the game’s free-form scenario gives players multiple routes to completing quests as well as choices that directly impact events and the outcome for locations in the game. One such quest sees the town of Toba ravaged by a storm that prevents its people from being able to fish. This storm is said to be caused by the ghost of Garon, a pirate who was shipwrecked after being attacked by Narwhal. Players can elect to progress the quest by soliciting help from either the fishmen or a witch.

Seeking help from the fishmen lets players make peace with Narwhal, who gives the player a mermaid potion to reach the sunken shipwreck and deal with Garon. Meanwhile, going to the witch sees players requesting assistance from various other races to obtain the materials to create the mermaid potion instead.

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is set in the Varennes Empire, which has an ancient legend of seven great heroes who will save the kingdoms within. However, its capital is suddenly attacked with the perpetrator being Kzinssie, one of the seven heroes. After Prince Victor is slain, Emperor Leon swears vengeance and uses inheritance magic to pass his power to his other son Gerard, starting a multi-generational war between the empire and the seven heroes. Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven will be released for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch on October 24, 2024.
