Unicorn Overlord Details Revealed

Atlus and Vanillaware revealed more information and media for upcoming tactical RPG Unicorn Overlord. The game was announced last week, and is set to release worldwide on March 8, 2024, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.

Unicorn Overlord is set on the fantasy continent of Fevrith. It is home to five nations — Cornia, Drakenhold, Elheim, Bastorias, and Albion — and inhabited by multiple races including elves, angels, and beastfolk known as bestrals. The story takes place after Cornia’s General Valmore rebels against the royal family and starts a war across the continent. The game’s main protagonist is Alain, the prince of Cornia, who is forced to flee during the uprising and, ten years later, rises to lead the Liberation Army.

Alain is joined by a selection of allies. Scarlett is a priestess of the Palevian Orthodoxy who tends to the cathedral on the island of Palevia, where Alain ends up after his flight. Meanwhile, Lex is a childhood friend of Alain’s who was born on Palevia and is a student of the holy knight Josef. Josef himself is the one who fled with Alain at the queen’s request, and has been working on establishing the Liberation Army.

Two other major characters are Queen Illenia and Galerius. Queen Illenia, Alain’s mother, was known for having a good military mind and being a steady ruler. However, she recognised that Valmore’s rebellion could not be stopped, and so entrusted Josef with leading Alain to safety. Meanwhile, Emperor Galerius is current name of Valmore. He has reestablished the Zenoiran Empire and laid claim to the entirety of Fevrith.

Unicorn Overlord’s gameplay sees players traverse its world while acquiring new allies, establishing bonds, and seeking victory for the Liberation Army. There are over 60 unique characters to recruit into the army. Players can reclaim and rebuild towns while training allies to prepare for facing more powerful foes. These characters can be placed into different units to take into battle. Players can choose from different routes and which battles to fight. As players reclaim more lands, they will gain access to more facilities and be able to explore more easily.

Combat sees each side aiming to take control of the other’s command posts, with different clear conditions such as defeating an enemy general. The larger battle is divided into individual battles between units when they make contact with each other. Units are given tactical orders in advance that determine when and how skills are used.

Unicorn Overlord will include three difficult levels: Sweet, Normal, and Hard. The game will also include an online PvP mode, available in the coliseum. Here, players can participate in battles against other players’ units.
