More Unicorn Overlord Details Revealed
Atlus and Vanillaware released more information and images for upcoming strategy RPG Unicorn Overlord. The update introduces additional characters, as well as more details about the game’s setting and some of its gameplay elements.
Unicorn Overlord is set on the fantasy continent of Fevrith. The land was once comprised of the five nations Cornia, Drakenhold, Elheim, Bastorias, and Albion. However, the reborn Zenoiran Empire now dominates the continent. In its previous guise, the Empire was said to be wiped out in a single day by a mysterious calamity. The game’s main protagonist is Alain, the prince of Cornia, who is forced to flee his home during the uprising that led to the Empire’s rebirth but rises ten years later to lead the Liberation Army.
Cornia is located in the centre of Fevrith, holding the most lands as well as fertile fields and a powerful military. Drakenhold is located in the mountains and deserts to the southeast with abundant mineral resources, and previously had border skirmishes with Cornia involving its powerful Dragon Knights. Elheim is home to both light and dark elves in the southwestern forests, and has a unique government headed by a divine seer. Bastorias covers the cold region in the north and is populated by beast-folk, led a by council of clan leaders. Finally, Albion is a religious state based on Fevrith’s large western island, with many of its populace members of the winged race known as angels.
Alain is joined by numerous allies in the game, with the new update introducing six of them. Travis is an experienced Cornian spy who joins the Liberation Army when it is formed under Alain’s command. Yahna is a witch who lives in a village that comes under attack from the Zenoiran Empire, using her magic to escape. Clive is a former Cornian knight, and has helped lay the groundwork for the Liberation Army as its founder Josef’s right-hand man. Chloe is the daughter of one of Josef’s friends, becoming his apprentice and also friends with Alain. Hodrick is another former knight who fought alongside Queen Ilenia during the initial rebellion before being captured. Finally, Melisandre is head of a distinguished Cornian family having lost her parents and brother to illness early in her life.
During the game, players will be able to explore the game’s overworld at their leisure. Players are able to fight enemies, liberate and rebuild towns, and upgrade their forces. Various quests and events can be found throughout the overworld. By defeating the enemies in towns, players are able to access armouries and tool shops, as well as remove some of the foes wandering the field. Liberated settlements can be rebuilt by delivering required resources, which adds new facilities and functions, such as inns for larger towns.
Resources used for deliveries and other purposes can be found scattered around the world, and will refresh after a certain number of battles. Players can also garrison forces in towns, granting extra rewards for future stage completions as well as collecting nearby resources. At forts, players can participate in mock battles, as well as expand their maximum unit sizes. Forts can be used by earning Honors from clearing stages and deliveries, and upgrading Renown through quest completion and town rebuilding. Renown can also be used to hire customisable mercenaries. Finally, players can pay gold to play a mining mini-game at quarries.
Unicorn Overlord is set to release worldwide on March 8, 2024, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. The game will include three difficulty levels — Sweet, Normal, and Hard — and an online PvP mode.
