Ys X: Nordics Releasing in Japan This September

Nihon Falcom announced that its latest title in the Ys action RPG series, Ys X: Nordics, will release in Japan on September 28, 2023. The game will be available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch. A western release has not yet been announced.

In addition, the company provided new details about the game, introducing four more supporting characters and naval exploration elements. Leif Yvelise is a childhood friend of Glen and Cruz but works outside of the town of Carnack and seems to avoid his family whenever he returns to the town. Mirabel Asarad works in as a nurse in Carnack’s clinic, which is run by her father, and has helped take care of Glen and others. Lila is a mysterious woman who communicates with Adol using a strange conch shell, giving him prophecies and asking for his help. Finally, a nameless old man lives alone on a small island. Though he has forgotten about himself and his past, he is able to teach Adol how to use Mana.

Ys X: Nordics will let players explore the islands around Obelia Bay in their own ship. At some point in the game, Adol will obtain the vessel Sandras and set out to explore unknown islands and fight against other hostile ships. Players will be able to navigate the open sea using the left stick and use a Mana skill to gain increased speed for short periods.

When players encounter hostile ships, they will need to manoeuvre the Sandras as well as selecting which weaponry to use. The iron cannon fires standard rounds and has limitless ammo but is tough to hit smaller and faster ships with it. Rapid shell rounds have high accuracy and hit as a burst, making the good against mobile opponents. Fireballs cause combustion and only do small amount of initial damage, but will continue to burn the enemy.

Players will also be able to encounter a merchant ship, which they can buy items from or trade items they have found while exploring. However, there is also a fake merchant ship that will attack when players try to engage with them to trade. Finally, some stronger ships will have a durability gauge that, when depleted, causes that ship to stop moving. At this point, Adol and Karja can board the ship and fight directly on its deck, giving them the opportunity to loot its treasures if they emerge victorious.

Ys X: Nordics takes place between the events of Ys I & II and Ys: Memories of Celceta. After leaving Esteria, Adol sets out to the land of Celceta, but stops along the way in the northern sea’s Obelia Bay, where he encounters a seafaring people called the Normans, as well as seemingly undead creatures called Griegers known to attack humans.
