New Release Round-Up (January 19, 2023)

Welcome to RPGamer’s new release round-up. In this column we look to provide our readers with details on all of the RPGs released over the week. Please note we do not currently include Early Access releases where the game is still in development.


Fire Emblem Engage

The latest game in the long-running tactical RPG series, Fire Emblem Engage takes place on the continent of Elyos. A thousand years prior, four kingdoms worked with heroes from other worlds to defeat and seal the Fell Dragon. However, that seal is weakening with the Fell Dragon about to reawaken. Players control a Divine Dragon and aim to collect Emblem Rings in order to restore peace to the land. New elements include interacting with Emblem rings that house spirits of other Fire Emblem heroes, allowing players to inherit skills or boost stats with them; a farmyard; and customisable outfits.


Monster Hunter Rise

Monster Hunter Rise is the latest mainline title in the series. The game includes two new major gameplay features — Wyvern Riding and the vertical-movement-assisting Wirebug — while Palamutes join Felynes as support-based companions. It also adds the Rampage, a gameplay mode where players are tasked with defending the village from numerous monsters attacking at once with assistance from defensive emplacements. Its Sunbreak expansion is available now for PC and Nintendo Switch, with releases on PlayStation and Xbox platforms planned for spring 2023. Persona 3 Portable

Persona 3 Portable is the PlayStation Portable remake of PlayStation 2 title Persona 3. It sees players controlling a Gekkoukan High School student in the city of Iwatodai, who joins “Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad” (SEES) to explore a mysterious tower called Tartarus and discover the nature of the Dark Hour, a strange 25th hour that most people are not able to perceive. The Portable version adds a female main character that alters some parts of the main story and other events. Persona 4 Golden

Persona 4 Golden is an enhanced remaster of PlayStation 2 title Persona 4. It puts players in control of a transfer student in the rural town of Inaba. He and his friends become involved with a series of murders and disappearances associated with a bizarre Midnight Channel after they discover the ability to enter a Shadow World connected to these events. The Golden version adds a new character, Marie, and a new story associated with her. Those while looking to read more about Persona 4 Golden can read Alex Fuller’s review of the 2020 PC version.
