RPGamer Wants You: Hiring Call

Update (Aug. 31) — please note that we have received a large number of applications. While we are still accepting applications, it may be that your primary desired role(s) have been filled so you may wish to consider alternative roles in your application.

If you’re looking to break into the gaming industry or have a strong affinity for the RPG genre and a love for writing, then RPGamer is the place for you. RPGamer is constantly looking to expand and improve upon its core team in a variety of areas and to give our readers and community the opportunity to join our team and help create more RPG-focused content for others to enjoy. Presently, we are accepting applications for the following areas:

  • News
  • Specialist Columns
  • Reviews
  • Community
  • Video Content

Descriptions of the roles and details on how to apply can be found below.

RPGamer is a strictly volunteer-run site and all positions are currently unpaid, but this isn’t to say that working here is without other rewards. Those writing for the site are encouraged to go about it in as professional a manner as possible, letting its writers have their content be read by a wide audience and the most renowned video game companies in the industry, and the site always aims to provide feedback to help its writers improve. RPGamer staff members are also privy to their very own @RPGamer.com email address, as well as the satisfaction of knowing that they are an integral part of RPGamer. Working here is also an excellent way to break into the gaming world; many of our former staff have gone on to work with development houses and media outlets both in the US and abroad.

General Requirements

  • Please note that you must be at least 18 years old to apply. Sorry, no exceptions.
  • Applicants will need to be self-motivated and able to work autonomously. If you are unable to work without constant supervision then RPGamer is probably not the place for you.
  • No experience is required to join RPGamer, but certain positions do require a writing sample.

News

  • News Writers will be expected to produce roughly two-three news articles on two or three days of each week. Press releases and story sources or media will generally be provided.
  • News Writers will need to follow RPGamer’s policy of not editorialising in news articles and not reporting on rumours or leaks.
  • News Writers will be expected to assist others by proof-reading their articles when able to.
  • Like all other positions, News Writers are welcome to get involved in staff-wide features produced by RPGamer. There will also be opportunities to branch out into other areas of the site.

Specialist Columns

  • RPGamer is looking at creating new columns based on a particular subject, such as MMORPGs or music news/reviews, to be updated on a regular basis.
  • Columnists will be expected to produce one editorial article or column every one-two months for their subject.
  • Columnists will be expected to assist other staff members by proofing their articles when able to.
  • Like all other positions, Columnists are welcome to get involved in staff-wide features produced by RPGamer. There will also be opportunities to branch out into other areas of the site.
  • Those looking to apply for a Columnist position will need to submit a writing sample as part of their application.

Reviewers

  • Reviewers will be expected to produce one review per month. The expectation is that these will primarily be for new releases, but Reviewers are welcome to revisit and review older games.
  • RPGamer Reviewers are required to complete a game before giving it an official review and will need to be familiar with and adhere to the site’s review score definitions.
  • Reviewers must be willing to accept feedback and potentially rewrite passages or adjust scores if asked to by senior members. Any score adjustments are based solely on the review content so as to fit within the scoring definitions.
  • Reviewers will be expected to assist other staff members by proofing their articles when able to.
  • Like all other positions, Reviewers are welcome to get involved in staff-wide features produced by RPGamer. There will also be opportunities to branch out into other areas of the site.
  • Those looking to apply for a Reviewer position will need to submit a writing sample as part of their application.

Community and Video Content

  • Community roles will be tasked with increasing RPGamer’s presence on social media (Twitter/Facebook/etc.) and engagement with readers. This will come in multiple forms, including but not limited to celebrating past games or helping to highlight RPGamer features and articles.
  • They will also be tasked with helping to establish discussions or events within the community — with the assistance of other RPGamer staff — such as on our Discord server, the website itself, or streaming.
  • RPGamer is also currently looking at expanding into more video content. This includes producing video versions of our written content or streaming content. At this stage we are open to ideas and are aiming to work with any applicants to determine the specific role requirements and content.
  • Like all other positions, volunteers in Community and Video roles are welcome to get involved in staff-wide features produced by RPGamer. There will also be opportunities to branch out into other areas of the site.
