Project Sakura Wars Gets New Livestream, Character Illustration Trailer

Sega held a new livestream for the upcoming Project Sakura Wars, showing more gameplay and revealing more details about numerous aspects of the game. The first details cover a newly-revealed character, Hakushuu Murasame, designed by Persona series character designer Shigenori Soejima. She is a swordsman who is friends with Sakura Amamiya’s father Tekkan and is known to be generally cool and composed, except for her odd taste in puns.

Next up is an item called the Smartron, which is effectively a smartphone used by protagonist Seijuurou Kamiyama during the adventure parts. It includes functions such as a map that displays any events going on, an activity/quest log, and a photo album. Other characters will call Seijuurou on his Smartron, including for emergencies when enemies appear. The Smartron also features a “World Koi-Koi Wars” mini-game, which lets players play the Japanese card game Koi-Koi against other characters.

Finally, after a certain point in the game, players will be able to access a battle simulator known as Ikusa-chan. This will let players replay story missions as well as other side-missions for each playable character in the game. Completing missions will be rewarded with new images for the photo album.

Project Sakura Wars is set in an alternate world in Taisho Year 29, which would be the real-world equivalent of 1940 had the Taisho era not ended with the passing of the emperor in 1926 (Taisho Year 15). The game takes place twelve years after the events of Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love and ten years after the Great Kouma War, during which forces from Tokyo, Paris, and New York saved the world from supernatural threats. The game is set to be released in Japan for PlayStation 4 on December 12, 2019, with a western release planned for spring 2020. Sega also recently released a new trailer showcasing the character designs from artist Tite Kubo compared with the characters’ appearances in-game.
