Kickstarter Check-In: Kingdoms of the Dump

Roach Games’ Kingdoms of the Dump is a RPG created by janitors turned into developers. The game is loaded with trash puns, with the below trailer showcasing the sprite work, main cast, gameplay, battle system, music, field abilities for platforming elements, and Mode-7 world map.

Taking inspiration from Super Nintendo RPGs, Kingdoms of the Dump takes place in the Lands of Fil and stars Dustin Binsley, a sentient trash-can that wields a sword and tosses his lid like the shield of a certain Marvel superhero. The king of Garbagia has been trashpicked and Dustin is the main suspect. With an equally eccentric supporting cast, Dustin must find secrets hidden within the waste and clear his name.

Kingdoms of the Dump features six playable characters each with unique field abilities and fighting styles. Players will be able to swap out characters on the fly to solve puzzles and overcome obstacle. There will be no random encounters, as monsters will be visible on screen. Battles take place on a tile board, with turn-based combat, and timed hits added for critical damage.

Kingdoms of the Dump is currently being developed for PC, Mac, and Linux. The game’s Kickstarter Campaign has a goal of $60,000, with stretch goals that include music composed by Hiroki Kikuta and potential console versions. The campaign is set to run until August 14, 2019, with those who pledge at least $15 receiving a digital copy of the game as part of their backer rewards. An initial demo is set to release in 2020, with the full game planned to release in 2022.
