Dragon Quest VII Reimagined Gets New Screenshots, Details
Square Enix released more screenshots and details for its upcoming title Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, a full remake of 2000 title Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past. The details include the introduction of the main cast, battle mechanics and character customisation, upcoming DLC, and save data bonus.
- The protagonist (voiced by Isaac Rouse): A young boy native of Pilchard Bay, a fishing village on Estard Island. Son of a fisherman, he dreams of discovering what lies beyond the sea.
- Kiefer (voiced by Roly Botha): The highly inquisitive and proactive prince of Estard. He accompanies the protagonist in his quest to uncover the world’s mysteries.
- Maribel (voiced by Becky Wright): A girl whose seemingly selfish nature belies a sweet side. She is a childhood friend of the protagonist and Kiefer.
- Ruff (voiced by Clare Corbett): A cheerful, pure-hearted boy. He is constantly accompanied by a wolf and possesses sharp, animal-like instincts.
- Aishe (voiced by Amrita Acharia): A young woman devoted to the Earth Spirit and determined to restore the Almighty. She is a skilled swordswoman and talented dancer.
- Sir Mervyn (voiced by Nicholas Boulton): A member of the Holy Order of the Almighty who once fought the Demon King. Skilled in swordsmanship, he has earned the title of hero.
The changes in Dragon Quest VII Reimagined battle system include the option to instantly eliminate weaker enemies in the overworld without initiating the turn-based combat. In addition, during battle, players can make use of an auto-battle feature and set up the party’s tactics. The playable characters can master different vocations, which come with unique spells, abilities, and stats. Starting with an initial vocation, they can change vocation later in the story and have two vocations at once. In the Reimagined release, each vocation also comes with a unique perk that can be used in battle once the character has been sufficiently “worked up.” Those perks can boost attacks or provide support to allies. For example, the new Monster Master vocation allows players to use the perk Positive Reinforcement, which summons powerful monsters to assault the enemies.
Square Enix announced three paid DLC packs: The Road of Regal Wretches, Luminary’s Livery, and Jam-Packed Swag Bag. The Road of Regal Wretches lets players challenge iconic foes from the Erdrick trilogy, Dragon Quest I-III. The Luminary’s Livery is a set of costumes for each party member and accessible through the Party section of the in-game menu. The Jam-Packed Swag Bag is a set of items that include consumables as well as Slime-themed equipment, accessories that boost experience and gold. In addition, each platform will offer a unique in-game bonus: Red Slime Shield (Nintendo eShop), Blue Slime Shield (PlayStation Store), Silver Slime Shield (Steam), and Green Slime Shield (Microsoft Store). The players who have a save data from the upcoming Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake will also receive an Agility Ring.
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined features a diorama-style aesthetic, with characters based on the original designs of Akira Toriyama that have been crafted into dolls created in the real world. The game’s narrative is said to be faithful to the original game, with changes made to provide a more streamlined story experience. It will include optional side quests, stories, and mini-games. There will also be various quality-of-life improvements, including a redesigned UI.
Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past originally released for PlayStation in Japan in 2000 and in North America in 2001 as Dragon Warrior VII. The game received a Nintendo 3DS remake in Japan in 2013, which was later released in North America and Europe in 2016, and was also released on mobile in Japan in 2015. The game starts on Estard Island, an idyllic kingdom in a world with no other apparent landmasses. However, a group of childhood friends uncovers a way to travel back to the past, when other continents existed, and are able to restore them in the present. Dragon Quest VII Reimagined will release for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2 on February 5, 2026, with pre-orders available now.
