Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, Dragon Quest of the Stars Japanese Versions Shutting Down

Square Enix has announced that two free-to-play mobile titles will be closing service in Japan. Both Final Fantasy Brave Exvius and Dragon Quest of the Stars will shut down on October 31, 2025. Purchases of in-game currency have been suspended for both games.

Final Fantasy Brave Exvius released for iOS and Android in Japan in October 2015. Its international version launched in June 2016, closing in October 2024. The game shares many elements with developer Alim’s previous title Brave Frontier, and is set on the world of Lapis. Players can build parties with summoned characters — using its gacha system — from past Final Fantasy titles as well as characters from other collaborations. The game also utilises other Final Fantasy elements including magic spells, limit breaks, and Esper summons. The game will receive a final story chapter and a “Grand Finale Campaign”, with a memorial version planned to release after its closure that will let players view unit picture books and scenarios.

Dragon Quest of the Stars was released in Japan in October 2015, with an international version launching in February 2020 before closing in June 2021. The game lets players create their own character, as well as two companions, to use for its solo adventure mode. It also features multiplayer modes that let up to four players team up together. It features its own storyline, as well as slimmed down retellings of numerous mainline Dragon Quest titles.

    Thank you, Alex.
After the global version of Dragon Quest of the Stars shut down, I transitioned to the JP version—and I’m so glad I did. It’s been an incredibly kind, fun, and welcoming community, bringing players from all over the world together to quest side by side. I’ve played daily across both versions for five years, and I’ll truly miss it.
Now I’m eyeing Dragon Quest X… hoping it might scratch that itch.
