Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven Introduces Characters, Classes, Abilities

Square Enix released more details about Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven, its upcoming 3D remake of Super Famicom RPG Romancing SaGa 2. The new information, accompanied by a new set of screenshots and artwork, introduces more characters appearing in the game, as well as their character classes and various combat abilities available to players.

Rather than featuring a single party, Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven sees players control a lineage of emperors in a long-running battle against the Seven Heroes of ancient myth. The game will feature over thirty available character classes across multiple races and professions, with the latest update introducing the following classes and characters:

Nomad — Altan and Fatima are both Nomads hailing the Steppe. Altan has equal strength and dexterity, and is adept at wielding axes, while Fatima has high dexterity and speed as well as high potential in magic.
Crusader — Georg and Sophia are both holy knights known as Crusaders. Georg has great strength and excels in close-quarters combat while weaving spells for defense, while Sophia has great magical talent, creating powerful and precise spells in lieu of using weapons.
Martial Artist — Karl is the Master Dragon, who leads the Dragon Lair and is responsible for the protection of the people of Nibel. He has great innate strength and has spent years honing his abilities.
Corsair — Henrique grew up on the waves of the Longit Sea. While he doesn’t get on at all with magic, he is very agile, which helps him in melee combat.
Saigo Clansman — Eirik is a member of Saigo Clan, which live and travel with the bovine mu that annually migrate across a frozen strait. His strength makes him adept at using heavy melee weapons.
Salamander — Kelud is a Salamander from Mt. Comroon. They can easily wield pyrology as well as having good physical prowess.
Amazon — Jeanne is a fearless and dexterous warrior from the wilds of Salamat. Her tribe used to live in Eirunep before its men were lured away by one of the Seven Heroes, with the women who were left forming their own community.

Each character class features a unique ability, such as increased HP, enhanced attributes, greater item drops rates, and so forth. These abilities are unlocked by having that character class defeat a certain number of enemies. After being unlocked, that ability can then be mastered, which allows it to be equipped onto other character classes.

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven’s world exploration allows players to sneak up on enemies and launch a surprise attack. This sees enemies take a small amount of damage as well as receiving a speed reduction during the first turn and increasing the party’s Overdrive gauge. However, players can also be on the receiving end of surprise attacks, which will break their formation and prevent them from escaping the battle for a certain number of turns. Each character has access to a selection of spells and techniques, which are activated by using Battle Points (BP). BP does not restore automatically and is replenished by staying at inns, using items, or finding special recovery zones.

As the game progresses, players will gain the ability for more characters to participate in United Attacks. These see between two and five members joining forces for a special chain attack. Ending a battle with a United Attack will provide bonus experience for the entire party. United Attacks are available when the Overdrive Gauge is filled, and the more times United Attack are used in battle, more party members will join it.

Once players establish a smithy in the capital city, they can spend materials and money to create and upgrade equipment. New equipment or upgrades orders take time to fill, which can be passed by fighting battles or progressing story events. Materials needed for crafting can be found from treasure chests, the environment, and enemies. New character classes can be found by progression through free-form story scenarios, with allies of recruited classes able to be added to the player’s retinue from any tavern. Meanwhile, players can use the world map to fast-travel between visited locations.

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven features a free-form scenario where players choices will directly impact events and the outcome for locations in the game. It is set in the Varennes Empire, which has an ancient legend of seven great heroes who will save the kingdoms within. However, its capital is suddenly attacked with the perpetrator being Kzinssie, one of the seven heroes. After Prince Victor is slain, Emperor Leon swears vengeance and uses inheritance magic to pass his power to his other son Gerard, starting a multi-generational war between the empire and the seven heroes. Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven will be released for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch on October 24, 2024.
