New Metaphor: ReFantazio Media, Details Released

Atlus released new media and details for its upcoming fantasy RPG Metaphor: ReFantazio. The new information and images cover the game’s story elements and characters, while the new trailer also shows some gameplay scenes and highlights key staff members including:

  • Director — Katsura Hashino (Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne, Persona 3, Persona 4, Persona 5)
  • Character Designer — Shigenori Soejima (Persona 3, Persona 4, Persona 5)
  • Composer — Shoji Meguro (Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne, Persona 3, Persona 4, Persona 5)
  • Concept Artist — Koda Kazuma (NieR: Automata)
  • Mechanical Designer — Ikuto Yamashita (Neon Genesis Evangelion)

Metaphor: ReFantazio is set in the United Kingdom of Euchronia. During the unrest following the assassination of the king, a magic known as the Royal Magic is invoked, which leads to a tournament for the throne. Meanwhile, the player character and their fairy partner Galica are on a mission to break a curse on the prince, who is believed to be dead by the rest of the kingdom.

The protagonist is a member of the elda tribe, who are regarded as tainted because of their inherited magic. They are rare across the kingdom and often discriminated against. Galica is too small to participate in battle, but aids the protagonist with her great knowledge of magic and ability to sense “magla”.

Other important characters include Strohl, a young man form the clemar tribe. He meets the protagonist in an army recruitment centre, even though he is from a noble family and nobles enlisting is rare. Hulkenberg is a knight from the roussainte tribe and former member of the Kingsguard. She excels in using various weaponry and was assigned to be the prince’s personal guard, electing to spend her time wandering after she failed in her charge when the prince was attacked. Finally, Heismay is a former knight of the eugief tribe. He has great perception thanks to his tribe’s sensitivity to sound.

Metaphor: ReFantazio was initially teased in 2016 under the code name “Project Re Fantasy”. The game is planned to release in fall 2024 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
