Baldur’s Gate III Patch 7 Adds Barbarians

Larian Studios released its latest major Early Access update for Baldur’s Gate III. Patch 7 is titled Absolute Frenzy and adds the Barbarian class, Improvised Weapons, and other gameplay additions and tweaks.

The Barbarian class comes in two sub-classes: Wildheart and Berserker. Wildheart Barbarians select a Bestial Heart, which provides inspiration and protection in the form of different combat abilities and facial piercings based on the Bestial Heart selected. Berserker Barbarians are able to convert their Rage into a Frenzy and gain access to two new bonus actions. Enraged Throw causes additional damage to enemies and inflicts the prone status, while Frenzied Strike lets the Berserker attack twice by using a bonus action such as Improvised Weapon.

The new Improvised Weapon action lets players wield any item (or creature) that weighs up to three times their Strength ability score. The Improvised Weapon can be thrown at enemies, where it deals damage based on its weight. The update also adds throwable daggers, javelins, hand axes, and spears.

Other improvements in the patch include an overhaul of the game’s UI as well enhancements to stealth and exploration. Light and dark-based detection is improved, while Darkvision now shows a cone of vision rather than “lighting” up the entire room. The patch also adds a fog of war mechanic and new magic loot items, as well as improved cinematics on over 700 cutscenes.

Baldur’s Gate III is based on the latest fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons ruleset. Its story sees the customisable player character and some others captured and forced to host a Mindflayer tadpole before the airship they are on crashes. The Early Access version is currently available on PC, Mac, and Google Stadia, with Larian Studios stating that the full release is currently expected in 2023.
