Kadokawa Games Announces Space Opera Relayer

Developer Kadokawa Games has announced space opera RPG, Relayer. The game is being developed by the team behind 2017’s God Wars, but will be a mech strategy RPG with over twenty unique character jobs and four different mech classes. The game will see a simultaneous worldwide release later this year in both physical and digital formats for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, courtesy of publisher Clouded Leopard Entertainment.

The game takes place in the near future, after humanity has made contact with the Relayers, extraterrestrial lifeforms bent on destroying the universe. Around the same time, certain humans called Starchildren begin to discover unique powers bestowed upon them by an ancient alien civilization. These Starchildren are the only ones capable of piloting Stellar Gear, large mechs that are humanity’s sole answer to the Relayers. Players take command in turn-based strategy combat across over 80 stages, utilizing the four different Stellar Gear types of Assault, Sniper, Tank, and Scout.

Relayer will feature English and Japanese voiced dialog, with subtitle language support in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Japanese, Traditional Chinese, and Korean. The game also includes certain thematic elements inspired by Greek mythology. In an interview with Weekly Famitsu, producer and director Yoshimi Yasuda has compared the size difference between the player’s Stellar Gear and some of the game’s bosses to “a human versus Mount Fuji”. He also hinted that there are plans in the works for a trilogy of games.
